Groovy Man,
By David R. Miller (Huntsville, Al USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Best of Booker T & the MGs (Audio CD)
Booker T and The MG's had a really cool sound in the 60's. I think they were way ahead of their time. The classic "Green Onions" is a good case in point. It starts off this album. "Green Onions" may be the only song by this group that most people are familiar with, but this album is full of gems. The jive "Can't Be Still", complete with hand clapping is great and the acid sound of "Boot-leg" was also ahead of it's time. "Tic-Tac-Toe" is a good pop tune and "Be My Lady" is groovy man. And then there is "Summertime", recorded before Janis Joplin's version and it is fantastic. I think I like it the best of any of the other tracks. It is bluesy and sultry, just like Janis' version. And it sticks in my mind days after hearing it. All of these songs are instrumentals. They didn't record vocals. This is a CD you will be proud to have in your collection.

I have both this one and The Defnitive soul collection, The reason I like this one better is because most of the songs are in True Stereo while the collection only has a few in Stereo, Yes, Most are in Mono. So if you want them in Stereo, get this one!!!

This collection is from Atlantic and covers 1962-67. Their is another collection from Fantasy that covers everything after this but I need to get the anthology from Rhino that combines both. In the meantime this makes great background music while you are cooking dinner, reading, working, getting laid, etc. There is sort of a sameness to most of their songs but it's a good sameness. "Green Onions" (along with Peter Gunn's Theme) are probably the coolest instrumentals ever.

A good early "Greatest Hits" collection,

This CD is basically a reissue of the old MG's "best of" LP on Atlantic. It covers the period from 1962 to 1966. There's not a bad song here, but the liner notes stink and the crude cover drawing on the cover is an abomination. "The Very Best of" collection on Rhino includes the best of these songs and a bunch of equally great ones from the MG's great 1966-1970 period. That collection has a nice cover, good liner notes, and photos--it's the best place for beginners to see what the MG's are all about.

Having friends over for bid whist? Dominoes?,

This is it! This CD would add to any gathering of friends to a sometimes cutthroat game of Bid Whist, dominoes, or gin rummy or whatever game you and your peeps like to play...by the time the CD gets to "Hip-Hug-Her", (one of my faves--I'm surprised no one's tried to sanple it for hip-hop. Not that I want to see it done, however.) the party and the game will be on! Add some good ol' home cooking and you and yours will have a good time, trust me.
