Like most Americans, I first got turned on to the Oils around the time Diesel and Dust hit the states back in '88. It didn't take me long to become a rabid fan and turn on to just about everything they ever did. I was also lucky enough to see them live seven times between 1988 and 2002--excellent shows all. I remember meeting a bunch of older guys from Canada in the parking lot after a show in the summer of '90--they intimated that the Oils were still just about the best live band going, but, well you shoulda seen 'em when they came to St. Andrews a few years ago.
This DVD proves that those guys knew of what they spoke. From the moment Peter Garrett comes roaring, screaming and flying across the stage at the start of the 1982 show, you know you're seeing something special. Although the tall, bald Garret and his incredibly long limbs steal the focus with his spasmodic dancing, the band meets his intensity every step of the way. Drawing mostly on stuff from 10, 9, 8. . ., Place Without A Postcard and Bird Noises, the music in this set is POWERFUL. Fans only familiar with the band's late 80's and early 90's output might be shocked by the sheer ferocity of playing. Its almost scary. Equally impressive, if somewhat more subdued, is the 1985 set from Sydney's Goat Island. This one draws on the funkier, more dance-oriented Red Sails in the Sunset and perhaps isn't as flat out intense as the earlier gig, but its still darn powerful stuff. Overall, this is a MUST for long time Midnight Oil fans--it might be a little pricey for casual observers, but that doesn't diminish the quality one bit.

This is a great dvd/cd combo, from are great australian band also this being a live concert its a good way to hear songs of various albums.
**DVD mixed 5.1 Dolby, Contains: Oils on the water & Saturday night at the capitol, with rehersal tapes and remixes. Oils on the water is a live show from 1985 on goat island in the middle of sydney harbour. This concert has 18 songs, the quality is very good for 1985. By far my favorite Dvd Concert of all time so high powered and alive, great song selection. Saturday night at the Capitol a live show from 1983 at the Capitol Theatre, 12 songs the quality retained from a 1983 is impressive a really good perfomance from the whole band. **CD Contains: 16 tracks, taken from Oils on the water concert The Cd is taken from the Concert Oils on the water (Also on the dvd). Very good quality as mentioned in the dvd section, this performance is exceptional can be listen to at any time (party, chillin out, etc). This package is a must have whether you are a fan of Midnight Oil or have never listen to them. This package got me into Midnight Oil highly recommended.

This is a double CD/DVD set. The DVD has 2, 1 hr+ (each) shows. Wonderfull live performances of Red Sails in the Sunset, and earlier work. The CD is good as well--an excellet purchase for any true Midnight Oil fan.
Contrary to the way Amazon has this item listed, it is NOT a just a CD; it was marketed by the band as a double performance feature originally taped for the Australian station "JJJ", in both '82 & '85. Do not expect large stadium style performances; these shows were a smaller format--one indoors and the second one out doors, at dusk on Sydney harbour. This DVD should be region free (I believe NTSC, region free), and will play in all North American DVD players. The ones for sale on eBay and other places scattered about the web are actually PAL encoded, and cannot be played in DVD players designed for American use.

The best Australian 80s band on DVD at last !
This contains all the great songs Misnight Oil began with in the early 1980s. Before they changed direction to a softer more acoustic side. Dynamic performances you will enjoy! A must get!

This is an amazing dvd-cd package! restored material from 82 & 85The dvd includes 2 shows, and the audio is a compilation of both shows from the dvd. Plus the dvd includes some rehearsal tapes and some mixes. Worth the price, since the Oils are no more a band :( Just be carefull, the dvd is Pal, region 0, so unless u have a dual dvd player (ntsc-pal) u can watch it. Long live the Oils!!! |
