Marketing Geniuses Blow It!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Bowie (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Concur with the majority on this one - this is a compilation of edited versions of his greatest hits - I believe that they blew about a minute and a half off of the original Young Americans. Took my copy back to Tower and they were agreeable to let me exchange it.

Don't be fooled by the cool new wrapper!,

Ok- I love David Bowie, and usually snatch up anything new that comes out. This, however, was pretty disappointing. It's the exact same CD as Best of Bowie (the single US disc)- same track listing, same artwork, etc. The only thing new here is the lame DVD that features 9 annoying techno trance remixes. Don't get me wrong- I'm all for Bowie club mixes, but most of these are just no good. The first 2 tracks have videos- Let's Dance just uses clips of the original video mixed with some boring artwork and an Indian woman dancing around. Heroes is just a bunch of rave kids dancing in a field. (The remix has great energy and would have been HOT, had it included any of the vocals!- but no, it's a continuous, mind-numbing loop of "we could be heroes...just for one day...we could be heroes...just for one day...we could be heroes...just for one day," etc, etc. Ugh! The "live video" for the song "Black Tie White Noise" isn't really even live- it's pulled from the 1993 video release of the same name (which most of you die-hards will already have). It's just Bowie w/ Al B. Sure lip-synching to the album track with a band behind them. Why this was tacked on here, I have no idea. So unless you dig listening to pounding club mixes through your TV (it as, after all, a DVD- not a CD, as it should have been), save your money and go enjoy the "Best of Bowie" that you already own- it's better.

Great Music, But...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Bowie (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
I didn't realize the CD part of this release would be identical to the single CD release from last year. While the music is all 5 star, great Bowie stuff, it would have been nice to have some different songs on this one. As for the DVD, it wasn't really too exciting. It might just be me, but the bolly remixes don't seem to add much to the music.

Shotty remixes,

before I post my review, I will point out that I AM a fan of dance music, and remixes also. This is the worst set of remixes one can choose for Bowie on a "remix collection". Most of them (I do like the Just For One Day remix vs. David Guetta though) are cheap and rehashful. Where are these remixes? all of which would've worked well Blue Jean (Extended) and there are others, those remixes belong on a Bowie remix cd more than generic fanmade mixes of China Girl, etc... Bowie and Virgin could've put out a killer dance album, but this isn't even lukewarm

WHY I BOUGHT THIS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Bowie (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Well, the reason I bought this - although I own every other Bowie album - was convenience. I'm past the era of making my own tapes and I don't do the MP3 thing. So this is it. Every reviewer below makes a good point - it's the same ol' Bowie compilation. Whether you get this one or another one - well, it's a good intro to Bowie if you want a taste of the man's genius. HOWEVER!! - A caveat. For dedicated listeners of Bowie's albums, nothing can be more annoying than the artificiality of the single edits that this album has. It's become redundant and it's something the album compilers should have avoided by making the album track versions the full length songs. Bowie is an album artist - not a singles guy. It's particularly jarring to hear some of the edits in songs like Young Americans and Scary Monsters if you've been listening to the original album tracks for years. Haven't listened to the bonus CD yet. The irony of it is that Bowie's extended mixes have never been very successful either...save it for some weird post modernist retro party?? Anyway - if you haven't the time to make your own mix tape - this will be better than nothing...

How many "Best of"'s before its enough? Bowie Corp makes yet another "release" to the market. Don't get me wrong, I have all the Pre-Outside albums including the Ryko reissues. But this is just plain wrong. To make things worse, theres even a "Sound+Vision" reissue. I guess that box set counts as 4 albums? That should make the record execs happy..

Don't do it...turn away...run!! If you're going to spend the money, please buy Ziggy, Scary Monsters, Low, or any of the previous Bowie hits comps."Not this record! NOT THIS RECORD!!" The DVD is just shy of laughable. In fact, I was agasp during the viewing that the space oddity would have allowed this to happen!?! I was mixing songs better than that with two boom-box tape machines, and a record player with a microphone stuck in the speaker....20 years ago!?!?! They're NOT good and definitely didn't deserve ANY sort of video format. Want a good CD/DVD package? Buy the Black Tie/White Noise double disc re-issue. It's not a hit package, but the album is superb and THAT...is what a DVD should be like!! Just don't buy this. You're not missing a thing. Hold out for the flood of used copies to be in stores near you. Mine is in St. Petersburg!! |
