5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD at once !, January 2, 2000
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
What makes a great deal of a difference between BRIGITTE BARDOT and other actresses who are into singing is that each and every song of BARDOT's was written for her, by the same people who were also her friends. The result is an incredible authenticity.

BRIGITTE BARDOT loved to sing even more than she loved to act: she would spend whole nights in recording studios, then she would rush at dawn to be on time at the movies studios. She wrote in her recent Mémoires that she never felt tired when singing (while she grew tired of acting), and it sure shows when listening to her records.

If you like different kinds of music, you'll love this CD even more: you'll find calypso, twist, pop, mambo, charleston, chanson...

This CD is also great for people who are learning French: BARDOT has such a personal way to pronounce words, detaching them from each other, which makes it very easy to understand the lyrics.

In a sociological and historical way, BRIGITTE BARDOT is what THE 50's and the 60's in France were all about. She is part of our collective memory.

Buy this CD: you can't be disappointed !

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this CD!, March 30, 1999

This Cd is fantastic, how many musical genres can you fit on one 20-track CD? There's cutesy pop, Gainsbourg's classics, and the adorable but cheesy Tu es le soleil de ma vie.

Gainsbourg wrote some wonderful songs for her, and they're mostly all here, Harley Davidson, Je T'Aime, L'Appareil a Sous etc. You can hear she's having a lot of fun on these songs.

If you like Bardot, buy it, it's a classic. Great photos too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une belle femme pour un bon prix!, October 1, 1998

This CD is a perfect introduction to the work of Brigitte Bardot.

Here she is at her most stunningly feline - particularly memorable moments include Je T'aime, moi non plus (the best version I have heard) and Bonnie and Clyde. There are, of course, more frivolous songs such as Bubble Gum and Harley Davidson, but one cannot fail to be won over by her silky seaside songs.

I am a girl, so listening to this makes me feel like wearing inappropriate things and behaving accordingly*. Et vous?

*Makes a great stocking stuffer!

A strong and very fun compendium of Ms. Bardot's 60's vocal recordings. This reviewer is someone who (1) has always enjoyed Ms BB, and (2) believes that she was a much better singer than many people realized. Ms. Bardot had a wonderful voice for unabashed pop music: She sounded like she looked, and that's saying something. Five seconds into the first tune (Appareil à Sous) you know for sure that you are in for a swinging time.... beach tunes, club dance music, motorcycles, audio erotica, bubblegum, etc. In addition, there is a notable cast of musical collaborators, as mentioned in other reviews here. Finally, and to quote another reviewer, you also get the "... tres belle photo sur la couverture." I have listened to this CD occasionally for 8-9 years now, and I always look forward to hearing it once more. If I lost this one I'd acquire it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harley Davidson. Need I say more?, September 7, 2001

Brigitte Bardot, the blonde-haired international Sex symbol of the 1960's and beyond, orginated from France where it is possible to have a hugely successful recording career without being able to sing. And god bless the French for it, I reckon. But Brigitte, as was her style, pouts, purrs and moans her way through this collection of songs which spannes her recording career from the early 60's to the early 70's. And everything is done so seductively. Some of the songs on this album will be nothing more than background music, but when Serge Gainsbourg starts to get involved in this album, things really spice up. Songs like "Bonnie and Clyde" "Contact" "Je t'aime...moi non plus" and of course the absolute classic "Harley Davidson" are truly amazing. Other standout numbers include "Le soleil de ma vie" (done with that irresistable Sacha Distel) "Tu veux ou tu veux pas" and "Je danse donc je suis". If you need a huge fix of 1960's French music, then come to the Queen of French entertainment at the time, Brigitte, and her incorrigable lover, Serge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight pop of the sixties and seventies, March 27, 2004
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Brigitte was better known as an actress and it would be fair to say that she was not a great singer - but she was good enough to make lightweight pop that is worth an occasional listen.

On this album, there are two duets with Serge Gainsbourg. Je t'aime moi non plus was intended for release as a single but it remained in the vaults - I think Brigitte decided she didn't want it released. In any case, Serge then recorded it with Jane Birkin. That version was released as a singe but was quickly banned in France. The singles were shipped across to the UK, where it was banned by the BBC but allowed to go on sale. It sold well, eventually reaching number one on the UK charts - a rare achievement for a record sung in a foreign language. The other duet between Serge and Brigitte is an original song about Bonnie and Clyde.

There is also a duet with Sacha Distel - a cover of Stevie Wonder's You are the sunshine of my life. Like everything else here, it is sung in French. It occurs to me that this is an ideal song for a duet although I've never heard any other duet version of this song. Among the solo recordings, highlights are L'appareil a sous, La Madrague and Harley Davidson. There are liner notes in English - this is a British compilation.

Brigitte's music is not essential, even if you are building a collection of French pop music, but it is worth an occasional listen, especially for Je t'aime moi non plus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pop-Culture more than music, November 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
I'd always thought of BB in her halcyon years as part-time actress and full-time sex-symbol but it turns out she had quite a well-developed singing career as well.
And yes, her voice is very attractive and full of personality although weakened by the common amateur failing of being unable to sustain pitch for more than an instant. She uses this weakness, however, by transforming it into the coy suggestiveness that is......what's the word?.......ah,SEXY. That's it!

To be honest, this CD is less about music per se than an illustration of the BB persona - playful, kittenish, risque, and tres sexeeeeee........and so it's probably more of interest to Pop-Culture historians than musicians. Many of the songs verge on the throwaway, especially the up-tempo ones, which are redolent of yeh-yeh 60s Parisian discotheques and not much else. She had some fine songwriters providing her with material but they seem to have saved their best material for technically superior singers. With her, the emphasis is on S-E-X-E-E-E to the detriment of many of the songs, which can be classified (and no doubt dismissed) as mere novelties. When she is given worthy material she can shine; there are some gorgeous ballads included here ("la Madrague" and "Une histoire de plage") where the combination of delicate pastel accompaniment and alluring voice makes me wish there'd been a lot more emphasis on these slower tunes. And of course there is the original version of "Je t'aime...." which is so sonically eccentric (like a smudge of sound) that I wondered if the mastering had messed up badly. It's still an oddly moving piece of music and BB's orgasmic moans have that certain ring of authenticity (this version wasn't released at the time because BB was then making the move to respectable woman and didn't feel that public orgasms were compatible with this new-found state of affairs).

And of course, the packaging lays emphasis on the sex aspect; the concertina fold-out liner contains no less than five CD-size pics of BB in assorted states of enticement. Still, that doesn't equal the appeal of the corresponding DVD which contains all three of BB's TV specials - including 34 songs. "Je me donne a qui me plait" ("I give myself to whomever I want") and the others take on a completely new dimension when you can SEE BB perform them. I recommend you go for the DVD instead.
