One of the bright spots in 70's country. These are the original hits and original recordings. I almost forgot how good they were. Really takes me back in time. I love this cd. For those of you who were not around in the 70's, you need to listen to this artist. Cal Smith can really show you how to put together a song, a performance and a story.

Unfortunately a large amount of the classic country music available on cd is not the original recordings but rerecordings by the original artist. I prefer to hear the songs as I remember them, not as they are reimagined. This collection contains most of the Cal Smith essentials (though there are a few songs like I'm Just a Farmer that it would have been nice if it included) and the songs are just as you remember them. Highly recommended to any Cal Smith fans out there.

I'd never heard anything by Cal Smith except for "Country Bumpkin", but I decided to order this.
It's unbelievably good! The guy probably would not rate as a great singer, but he has fabulous material and really evokes the era. There are a lot of great story songs like "Jason's Farm," and "Ghost of Jim Bob Wilson" in the vein of Tom T. Hall or Bobby Bare's "Lincoln Park Inn". And Cal sounds completely believable on "Drinking Champagne." Oh, and he's got one of the greatest kiss-off songs of all-time: "An Hour and a Six-Pack"--Instant classic.
