I had no idea this collection was out until I ran across it in a music store today. I kept waiting for A&M Records to release a "20th Century Masters" CD on them, since they had already done so for other A&M artists like Rita Coolidge and The Carpenters. Although all of the songs on this compilation are available on the "Ultimate Collection" CD, this still makes for a nice, budget-line selection. This CD could be called "True Greatest Hits" as it nicely includes all seven of their Top 10 pop hits, along with additional adult-contemporary hits and fan favorites like "Come In From The Rain" and "Circles". Now....just waiting for their other A&M albums to be represented on CD.

The sound on this disc is wonderful! A better buy than Captain & Tennille's Greatest Hits because it includes songs recorded later in this duo's career (e.g., "Do That To Me One More Time" and "You Never Done It Like That").

Get over your fear of muskrats and check out the incredible musicianship that is Captain & Tennille!

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars All you need of one of the most popular pop acts of the 70s!, August 27, 2009

When you say the 1970s the most immediate thought is Disco music.Disco reigned supreme during these heady days but smack in the middle were alot of other acts that were decidedly non-Disco eking out a pretty good career. One of those acts was Captain and Tennille.
"Captain" Daryl Dragon played a mean keyboard and had backed many a band including the Beach Boys when he auditioned for Toni Tennile.Toni was a great singing talent and the two struck up an immediate bond, eventually marrying in 1975.The two submitted a demo of "The Way I Want to Touch You" and they were signed by A&M Records.Daryl was responsible for most of the arrangements and the two struck musical gold with songs like Smokey Robinson's "Shop Around"(they made it their own),"Muskrat Love","Lonely Night","Love Will Keep us Together" and others.
Unless you are a compleatist and a fanatical Captain and Tennille fan,all of the duos biggest hits and minor ones are here for your enjoyment;you need not look any further. And for the price this is a bargoon and a half.
Dragon's arrangements were always pretty slick and a close listen reveals his precision playing while beautifully suporting Toni's wonderful vocal talents. As an aside I do believe that Toni also employed her sister as a back up vocalist on many of their early hits.
The duo had a short lived TV series which thankfully lasted only one year.It was a sickly sweet affair which did nothing for their careers. Both have apparently been keeping busy since.I have not heard as much of Daryl as I have Toni who backed up Elton John on his mega-hit song"Don't the Let Sun come down on me" and has worked with Pink Floyd. In addition she did some concerts and released CDs singing from the great American Songbook.
Some of these Millenium Collections I find just cannot possibly encompass their particular subject matters' career in just one CD but many others can and this is one of them. For the price this is as precise and good a release for the Captain and Tennille as you will find anywhere. All of the songs have been digitally mastered well and I recommend these toe tapping hits to everyone.

When I hear the music of Captain & Tennille (husband and wife duo Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille), it immediately brings back to mind fond memories of the days when their songs could make the airwaves sizzle! Their music remains irresistible to this day; it's all THAT good. Their sound was particularly emotive and every track on this album proves it. The quality of the sound is also quite good. If I have any qualm at all about this album it would be that a single CD retrospective of just twelve of their numbers really isn't enough to highlight their talent.

"Love Will Keep Us Together" has a terrific beat and sound to it; they perform this with panache and I love every minute of it! It's a romantic song, too; and I like that. "The Way I Want to Touch You" has a lush musical arrangement that I always enjoy hearing; and there's yet another gem when they perform Willis Alan Ramsey's "Muskrat Love." "Shop Around" features their fine ability to cover this Smokey Robinson song as Toni Tennille shows just how well she can interpret the lyrics to a great tune! In addition, "Wedding Song (There Is Love)" is very well done; and I'll never forget the poignant "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" that couldn't have been done any better!

"Come In From the Rain" stuns me with its beauty; and "Circles" is wonderful, too. "We Never Really Say Goodbye" is another moving ballad; and "Can't Stop Dancin'" has a lot of positive energy to it! The CD ends strong with Captain & Tennille's sublime treatment of Neil Sedaka's "You Never Done It Like That" and "Do That to Me One More Time." By this point I usually reach for the "replay" button on my CD player to hear and enjoy the entire album all over again!

Captain & Tennille rank high in my book because their music touches my heart and did the same for so many others, too. I think, however, that this particular CD is geared more toward the casual fan or people just discovering Captain & Tennille because there really isn't enough music here to be a five star retrospective. Sure, we get nothing but very special music here, but diehard fans will probably have all these numbers in their collections; they should look for more comprehensive CDs or a CD box set by Captain & Tennille.

I really enjoyed this cd because it has all of their great songs on it unlike their greatest hits album.
This is a must have for any collector of 70's music.

My wedding song is on this cd. I've been trying to find this song for a while now & was thrilled to discover it. I still have the album we used at our wedding but this is easier to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Condensed Down to the Basics!!!, September 11, 2009
This review is from: The Best of Captain & Tennille: 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
This is a surprisingly good basic CD collection of Captain and Tennille hit songs. Recorded well with little to no fiddling with (little to no remastering), all seem to be the original songs we all know/love. Condensed down to the very basics--all good songs--very reasonably priced--good deal! We love it!

That unique, synthesized sound with Ton Tennille's marvelous voice make this a nostalgic treat for fans of 70s pop. True, a lot of the lyrics are corny or downright inane (Muskrat Love), but it's a very pleasant collection of tender and/or happy tunes.
