A Brilliant Compilation, June 18, 2009
This 2001 compilation of some of the best songs and tunes recorded by Chet Baker is part of "The 10 Best Series" from EMI-Capitol Music Special Markets that gives accolades to great talents such as Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Billie Holiday, Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Count Basie, The Andrews Sisters, Jackie Gleason and many more.
Chet Baker did not have the vocal attributes of Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole or Mel Torme, but he was simply Chet Baker whose voice was mysteriously alluring. He was a singer and musician who delivers a song or a melody in an effortless manner and leaves a lasting impression in each interpretation that ultimately becomes his very own. A perfect example would be "My Funny Valentine." He recorded this song in different settings--with or without vocals--and each rendition is such an enjoyable listen. It eventually became his "signature tune" which he never failed to include in almost all of his albums, live shows and concerts.
"The Best of Chet Baker" represents his most notable recordings during the span of his recording career. What I loved most about this compilation is that every track is easy-on-the-ears and exudes a sense of nostalgia especially "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Like Someone In Love," "Let's Get Lost" and "Darn That Dream."
This is a brilliant compilation, but my only concern is there isn't any liner notes--not even a brief information about the selected material. I'm old-schooled when it comes to buying albums. I still prefer physical CDs over digital downloads (which I've used occasionally) mainly because of CD booklets which contain liner notes and all the recording information that an avid listener would like to find out. Nevertheless, it's the material that matters most of all. It is still a welcome addition to any jazz lover's collection. Give it a listen and enjoy!
