5.0 out of 5 stars Let It Ride, May 11, 2006
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
I already reviewed the Golden Classics Chi Coltrane CD from Collectables, but this in my view is a better mix. Why? Chi's charting hits were "Thunder and Lightning" and "Go Like Elijah," both of which are from her self-titled Columbia record (which had a great cover). This DVD includes mostly songs from that album along with cuts from her next album, Let It Ride, including the title song and my favorite, "Hallelujah."

Chi combines an accomplished piano style with a soaring rock voice. Her songs can be introspective musings as in "You Were My Friend", "Goodbye John," or energetic celebrations "Thunder and Lightning", "Hallelujah". "I Will Not Dance" is a searing anti- (Vietnam) war protest. I was laughing because Amazon suggests you buy this along with the Golden Collection, and were you to do so, you'd get a lot of the same songs. On second thought, though, it's not as crazy as it sounds. There are at least five great songs on the Golden Collection not on this disc: "Time to Come In", "Goodbye John", "The Tree" "Turn Me Around" and "It's Really Come to This". My preference would be for the first and second albums to be rereleased in their entirety, along with Road to Tomorrow, but until then, here's a great collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collection, August 17, 2006

This CD is a huge improvement over the "Golden Classics" CD that was issued many years earlier. "The Best" CD only contains 4 songs not on the previous set; however, the sound quality is so far superior that it is worth owning for that reason alone. In addition, "The Best" contains "Hallelujah" and "Let It Ride," two of her best songs not found on "Golden."

The real problem for Chi fans is that, apart from her first two albums for Columbia, nothing else remains in print on CD in the USA, or anywhere else that I'm aware of. "The Letter" can sometimes be found, but "Silk and Steel," "Live," "Ready to Roll" and "Road to Tomorrow" remain in never-never land. Such a real shame, too, as all of Chi's albums are well worth hearing - again and again.
