This is a shell game ...,

This is a RERECORDING of the music. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you want ridiculous "digitally recorded in 1995" versions of great songs. It sounds absolutely terrible.

The Best of The Chi-Lites,
By Dennis Yee (Soul-Town, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Best Of The Chi-Lites: The Original Brunswick Recordings 1969-1976 (Audio CD)
To any and all "true" Chi-Lites or Eugene Record fans, This album containing the phase of greatest hits or best of... in its title should not be used because it is misleading. This album in particular although contain a few solid hits does not do the group justice. This album is only but a sparkle of the real brilliance of what the Chi-Lites have to offer. Please, please, please, consider the "Too Good To Be Forgotten" BOX collaboration as your only option. This BOX collection really and truly defines the superb talents of Eugene Record and the group. There are so many vintage songs that only could be found on LP's, but now can be appreciated again on CD. Do not sell yourself short.......Get the real deal! You will thank me for it, but more importantly you will THANK YOURSELF for doing the right thing.

Truly a Chi-Lites Fan,

Although this album contains some of the gems, the "Too Good To Be Forgotten" box set would be a better deal. A lot of the songs that had the Chi-Lites 'out there' are missing on this album (ex: Toby). Not bad, but, I know there's something better.

All the big British and American hits,
By
This review is from: The Best Of The Chi-Lites: The Original Brunswick Recordings 1969-1976 (Audio CD)
Hailing from Chicago, the Chi-Lites took a while to find success but their efforts eventually proved worthwhile. Eugene Record, a singer-songwriter-producer, dominated the group, which achieved an American breakthrough hit with Give it away in 1969 although they did not enter the British charts until 1971, when they had a minor UK hit with For God's sake give more power to the people - a very different record from the soulful ballads that they are best remembered for.1972 proved to be a big year for the Chi-Lites, yielding Have you seen her (a top three hit in Britain and America) and Oh girl (a number one American hit, though only a top twenty UK hit). Their last major American hit came with Homely girl but (after a slow start) their success in the UK continued until 1976. Homely girl, It's time for love and You don't have to go all made the UK top five, as did a re-issue of Have you seen her (just over three years after its original chart run). This compilation contains all the important Chi-Lites hits from both sides of the Atlantic. NOTE - This review is posted on more than one Best of Chi-Lites CD. My review refers to the British compilation on the Kent label.

Fabulous trip down memory lane,

Listened to this album over and over on an 800 mile trip with adults in their 20s and 30s. We listened over and over, and the memories were great, the music was mellow, and one passenger in the car said, "I did not know they were the original singers!" He refered to sampling done by today's artists. This album is definitely one of my best buys, no regrets. Songs back then were well written and well sung, and conjured memories that made us laugh, smile and reminisce. Also, we knew most of the songs.

This CD took me back to the good old days. I remember hearing the Chi-Lites when I was growing up. This CD will remind you of how good music from back in the day sounds.

Brunswick,
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Can you help me find the original recording on "Stoned Out of My Mind" by the Chi-Lites. Most of the C.D.'s are the Brunswick re-recordings. Thankyou.Russell M. Wilson Jr. |
