Classic early sixties girl group,
By
This review is from: Best of Chiffons (Audio CD)
The Chiffons were one of the most successful girl groups of their era and comprised Judy Craig, Barbara Lee, Patricia Bennett and Sylvia Peterson. They are remembered primarily for three hits. He's so fine topped the American charts and made the UK top twenty, but gained notoriety when George Harrison had a major international hit with My sweet Lord in 1971. Unfortunately for George, the melody of My sweet Lord was remarkably similar to He's so fine and he lost a court case over the royalties. One fine day was a top five American hit and top thirty UK hit. Sweet-talking guy also charted on both sides of the Atlantic. It was only a minor UK hit when first released but made the top five when re-issued in 1972, possibly to capitalize on the court case. Those were their only British hits but they had other American hits including Tonight's the night, Love so fine and I have a boyfriend. All those hits can be found on this excellent collection. If you enjoy music by such groups as the Shirelles, Shangri-las, Crystals and Ronettes, give the Chiffons a listen.

The truth is The Chiffons are only well-remembered in the States for "He's So Fine", "One Fine Day" (with its songwriter Carole King tearing up the piano as a bonus) and "Sweet Talking Guy", but they made a good presentation of songs made famous by others ("Tonight's the Night"-the Shirelles most notably). The price is right to own this collection. A footnote: After George Harrison lost the court decision for "My Sweet Lord" sounding so much like "One Fine Day", he bought the publishing company that owned the rights to "One Fine Day". I say give this one a try.

IN THE 50'S THROUGH THE 60'S THE SHERILLES AND THE CHANTELS WERE THEE GIRL GROUPS OF THEIR TIME, BUT IN THE EARLY 6O'S OTHER GIRLS CAME ALONG WITH MUCH SUCCESS. AMONGST THESE WERE THE ANGELS("MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK") AND THE CHIFFONS ("HE'S SO FINE") WHOSE BIG HITS WERE OUT AROUND THE SAME TIME.EACH GIRL GROUP HAD A DISTINCT SOUND. THE CHIFFONS WITH THEIR "DOO LANG DOO LANG" AND SWEET HARMONIZATION HAD MANY FOLLOW UPS LIKE "ONE FINE DAY" AND "SWEET TALKING GUY".THEY EVEN REDID SOME OF THE ANGELS RECORDS IN THEIR OWN STYLE. DON'T MISS OUT ON ALL THEIR GREAT C.D.'S, BUT BUY THIS ONE FIRST!

THIS IS A GREAT C.D.!DURING THEIR REIGN OF HIT AFTER HIT, THE CHIFFONS HELD THEIR OWN, DESPITE THAT THEY HAD LOTS OF GREAT COMPETITION. THIS WAS THE TIME OF THE SHERILLES,THE CHANTELS, THE CRYSTALS,THE SUPREMES,THE VANDELLAS, THE ANGELS ETC.THE CHIFFONS HAD DISTINCT HARMONIZATION WITH THEIR "DOO LANG DOO LANG" SOUND.THEIR COMPETITION DID NOT SEEM TO BOTHER THEM. IN FACT, THIS C.D. PROVES IT, THEY EVEN REDID THE ANGELS' "MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK" , RAMPARATA AND THE DELRONS' "STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN" AND EVEN LESLEY GORE'S "IT'S MY PARTY".KICK BACK AND GO BACK TO THAT WONDERFUL TIME WHEN EVEN THE BEATLES HAD TO STEP BACK AND ALLOW THE GREAT GIRL GROUPS TO HIT #1!!BUY THIS ONE!!
