I love these books. After my recent purchase I now have three Frank Mantooth songbooks. They're very easy to go thru with the original chord changes in black and right above are the revised chord changes in red. The books are spiral bound so none of that annoying flopping. There are no first and second endings......the entire song is written out. And all the lyrics are there as well. Many of these standards are very old and some have some pretty hokey original changes so the altered changes gives them a very contemporary "jazzy" sound.

Maybe some of our "seriously hip" jazz piano players would challenge these offered chord changes. But if you simply want to sound like you know a little more than you actually do, and you play "a little hipper" than you actually do, I'm pretty sure you'll be satisfied with this book.

And Amazon has the best price because if you get two, or your purchase is over a certain amount (which is fairly low) then my suggestion is to choose the Super Saver Free delivery. It's supposed to be a few days longer in getting to you but my experience has been no more than one or two days longer.

I spent some time reviewing the changes in this book, hoping that it would be really reliable - it is not.

It could be a good learning tool for someone starting out in jazz - it is probably very good 95% of the time, but I am a perfectionist and don't want to play any bad changes. I would not feel confident offering his charts to anyone to play on a gig, without careful review, and corrections, by hand.

Case in point: Desafinado.

Desafinado is a beautiful song that has been notoriously butchered in many fake books and has resulted in scores of musicians 'learning' this song and ceaselessly butchering one of the greatest compositions of one of the greatest composers. In spite of the title (translation: out of tune), this song is quite perfectly IN TUNE - with some perfectly crafted harmony and melodic resolutions. The charm of the song is destroyed when it is mecilessly played wrong.

Unfortunately, this book continues the butchering process - with one chord: D7 (measure 11).

This may seem nit-picky to some, but play it yourself and see if you don't agree:

1. Play D 6/9 (or Dmaj7, if you prefer) - the CORRECT change for this measure (per Joao Gilberto's original recording).

2. Play D7 - per Frank Mantooth's arrangement in this book (same as Chuck Sher's "New Real Book, Vol. 1", and many others, incidentally)

My ears cringe at hearing the tritone of Mantooth's D7 here: the preceding Gm7 to A7b9 really cries out for the resolution to D 6/9 (or Dmaj7) - Mantooth's dominant 7 sounds very harsh and detracts from the melody; not to mention stealing the thunder from the next measure of D7b9!

I could forgive many other 'errors' where a chord sounds good even though it is not what was written by the composer or was not ever performed by anyone. In this case, the harmony just sounds bad. Buyer beware.

This is an excellent quality fake book with excellent song selections, however I was not very impressed with the "professionally altered chords." These suggested chords consist of tritone subs, extra ii-V's, some altered chords, some suggested suspensions, some suggested bass notes, and some prolongations by typical harmonic movements. Suffice to say, nearly all the suggestions are intuitive to one who's played out of fake books before and understands progressions and jazz harmony. Still, I'm sure it's a nice study to anyone who wants to solidify their mastery of fake book playing. There are some harmonies suggested that are part of definitive recordings, and that is cool. I was used to Dick Hyman's suggested altered chords in his books and Mantooth's fake books are just a step below, with Hyman's being more creative, more challenging, and better thought out.Read more ›

I bought the whole Mantooth series of books because the songs are great and the chord suggestions are interesting. The music is easy to read because of the size of the book.
