This is the best book for someone who wants to move up into the jazz arena. I was a musician for twenty years before I was brave enough to play solo jazz piano and this is one of the books that allowed me to get much better. I had bought every other jazz piano book and I did not get anything out of them. Only this and one other Mantooth book did it, with a little help from one other book. Buy it, you'll never regret it.

Referred from anohter piano player, this book offers an excellent selection of well known standards and pop tunes with one of the best arrangements for jazz piano to come by in a long time. No bass cleffs are included: this book is for piano players who use chords and improvise bass lines normally. But the chord progressions are a wonderful surprise and help illustrate what you can do with harmonics and a good bass line.

The big, in-most-cases two page layout of these tunes makes for easy reading. It's a great selection of tunes, which is why I bought it in the first place. However, I was really hoping for some creative chord change alternatives. I mean, when I read "... with professionally altered chords" my impression was there was some in-depth thinking about substituting the chords from the original. Unfortunately no or at least, not so much.

Some of the songs in this book are masterpieces written on only 1 or 2 pages. The chord changes are interesting too.
