Christmas at the Bear family household is slim this year, but Mother Bear and Father Bear create holiday spirit by adorning their home with decorations sewn from outgrown clothes and a tree assembled from gathered branches dusted with flour. Little Bear worries whether Santa will come and ultimately proves to be the most resourceful to ensure that gifts are under the tree. On Christmas day everyone has a present—a mended kite for Brother; a once-missing umbrella for Sister; a favorite old hat for Father; and, for Mother, a long-lost button that has been conspicuously missing from her red dress. This charming tale demonstrates that even the smallest person can give big gifts, requiring only love and ingenuity.

But Little Bear reminds his father that Santa Claus has never let them down. Sure enough, under the small tree there is one present for each family member. Brother discovers his damaged kite, now mended. Sister's lost umbrella is returned. Mother cradles her newly found button like a jewel. Father gets back the hat that blew off while he was looking for a tree, and Little Bear's baseball glove is polished like new. The family notes tiny footsteps around the tree, and astute children will realize that Little Bear is responsible for the gifts. This is a particularly handsome book: the paper is thick; the illustrations are stark yet moving, with much of the impact coming from the arresting design and the characters' body language; even the typeface, looking as if it came from a typewriter, is unique. Feel good christmas,

Father Bear has had a bad year and there is so little money that the Bear family does not expect Christmas presents. But when Christmas morning comes, there ARE presents under the tree and little footprints in the flour snow around the base of the tree. The presents themselves are surprising in their simplicity. Here is a picture book that speaks to what Christmas should be.
The pictures are simple and the colors muted and that fits the story perfectly. This book is destined to become one of my all-time holiday books - and I have a lot of them.

A wonderful message for the season. You don't have to buy presents or spend money to have the happiest Christmas ever. There is one typo. Farther instead of Father. You'll be hard pressed to find it.
