5.0 out of 5 stars None better than Xymox
If you saw me you would never guess that I'm a Xymox fan, being a black girl from the south side of Chicago. I look like I should be listening to Beyonce or Nelly, but really I am HOOKED on Clan of Xymox. Their sound is so appealing, it doesn't matter who you are--you'll love it. I really miss those great alternative bands from the 80's (Depeche Mode, Cure, Nine Inch...

1.0 out of 5 stars Decent set of songs, but hardly a Best Of
Two big problems with this album:

1) The original 4AD recordings were perfect as they were. There was no reason to re-record them.

2) No Best Of is complete without any material from either "Twist Of Shadows" or "Phoenix".

I'm guessing that the reasons for these problems are due to licensing. But if the licensing issues could not...

5.0 out of 5 stars None better than Xymox, February 19, 2005

If you saw me you would never guess that I'm a Xymox fan, being a black girl from the south side of Chicago. I look like I should be listening to Beyonce or Nelly, but really I am HOOKED on Clan of Xymox. Their sound is so appealing, it doesn't matter who you are--you'll love it. I really miss those great alternative bands from the 80's (Depeche Mode, Cure, Nine Inch Nails) but they're just shallow compared to Xymox--such a rich sound with alot of depth and mystery. Even their 'lighter' sounding songs are profound. I really would LOVE to see them in concert someday. Hopefully they're not really saying farewell, as their latest album title implies.

My favorite songs are 'Equal Ways', 'This World', 'Louise', 'At the End of the Day',and 'It's All a Lie',also 'Phoenix of my Heart' which are mysteriously absent from this CD. Still, this is a collection of great songs, better than most popular music available today. There's no comparison to Xymox--they're awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best gothic bands ever!, September 21, 2004

I was really surprised to hear about this Best of Cd! Even though I already own everything they've ever recorded, I will still buy this cd. It's a great compilation of most, but not all, of their different time periods and style changes. It will be nice to have this representation from most of their albums. I find Xymox to be great evening driving music! They never disappoint and it will take you back if you used to go clubbing in the 80's and early 90's. Many of the early tracks were staples then. I'm sure Ronny and the gang will be around for a long time and I'll still be listening to these songs when I'm 80!

5.0 out of 5 stars My best buy this year, September 15, 2004

This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
I am one of those old fans from the clan , for 19 years and I must say that I was a bit weary of the news that my favorite old songs were newly recorded. When I played the CD it was a complete shock to me to hear the new versions were the same , I expected to be different but when I listened more closely the tracks revealed a lot more than on the original versions. Everything comes out so well with Ronny's voice sounding at his best. I am grateful for having these versions now added to my collection because I just can't have enough of them ever. i think I own all the record they have released and they continue to intrigue me with each new offering. They are truly great artists and hope they continue for many years to come. I consider myself as a critical fan but I cannot criticize them for anything they have done in the past or present. They simply have my devotion , forever

5.0 out of 5 stars A real masterpiece, September 15, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
I just stopped playing this album after listening to it non stop for a day.To me it really shows that Clan Of Xymox is indestructible. They keep bringing out hit material , year after year. The album is pretty upbeat but also has resting points , like the generously written Consolation which is a real gem. After all these years they keep me on my toes, they are never predictable. I only wished they would come to the US and play live over here. I am waiting now a long time to see them play live. Anyway , I will stick to my album review and I give it a full thumbs up! I am Polish and saw them live in Warsaw before the fall of the Soviet Union. It was crazy back then with more then 10.000 screaming fans . I hear they still play festivals regular in Poland , so one of these days I will go and see them there.

5.0 out of 5 stars very VERY nice indeed, December 14, 2005
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
To catch up with their work I would recommend to listen to this album first ,although you would miss out on the many very beautiful slower works like Creatures, All I Have, It's All A Lie, Your Vice, Dark Mood, One More Time,Losing My Head, , Consolation, Undermined, At Your Mercy, Internal Darkness, Into Her Web etc. I just realized I made up a complete new Best Of Clan Of Xymox album and maybe they should consider one, featuring their more ambient side which they so perfectly set inbetween their more upbeat songs throughout their career.
Like many other fans I know I was delighted with this offering and this album always keeps me going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you for the Best Of COX album !!, September 15, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
I see their is a lot of commotion around this Best Of album. I am a new(er) fan and actually like their latest albums way better. I just want to say to people (who might know them longer) not to get stuck in the past , like what a lot of people seem to do. This is a sad fact for most bands, they get haunted by their past and their so called fans don't want them to develop in any direction.
I really like the album and actually voted for a lot of songs which to my surprise are listed on the album. The overall feel is that there is a consistent line in their music over all the years and I can only congratulate them for that, therefore I give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine collection, September 20, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
This is a fine collection of songs. I am glad that the album is really diverse and is not put together in a random way. I enjoy the music from the beginning to the end. It really goes well with my early Depeche Mode collection. A shame the song Reason (a b- side ) did not make it on it , but hey , there's plenty to choose from anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vita Nuova for Clan Of Xymox, September 15, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
The Critic as Artist, just to quote O. Wilde.
This album makes my car drives less lonely when I go to work. I have to watch out that I start driving faster when I hear There's No Tomorrow, it just gives me that energy I need to face the world. It is great they included Innocent, a masterpiece to me. M.Mosquito makes me really want to go 150 on the motorway between cities, a real jewel which I did not know yet. Stranger I find the odd one out but I heard it was a club classic . I am very happy with this album , most likely FROM SPRING DAYS TO WINTER

5.0 out of 5 stars A gothic dream, September 23, 2004
This review is from: The Best of Clan of Xymox (Audio CD)
Clan of Xymox is my favorite band. I have bought every album, even the not so good ones from the Xymox dance era. This cd is a great collection of songs--a perfect sampler for the C.O.X. newbie, as well as a great nostalgic piece for the diehard fan. The new mixes of the songs from the last two cd's are better than the cd versions, I believe. I like the redo's of the 4AD era stuff. If you have heard the cd Live from Clan of Xymox, then you've heard similar versions to the remakes. However, the Live version of Back Door is much better than the remake on Best OF CD. I didn't like the effects added (buzzy syth sounds that are nowhere on the original). There are cheesy effects added to Stranger that don't improve the song any at all and the wonderfully dark intro is missing. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this band and have seen them live 3 times, but he should have simply made those two sound cleaner/crisper instead of adding new sounds. Louise, my fave Clan song, sounds really clear vocally, taking away some of the wonderful murkiness of the one on Medusa. However, what I dislike or like, another person may like the opposite--Buy it and check it out!
