Has All of Their Best Songs!,
By Aaron (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 10 best series: The Best of CULTURE CLUB (Audio CD)
Culture Club was a smash in the early/mid 80's with a string of successful pop hits. They are still one of the most remembered pop groups to come out of the 80's. This is a great collection for such a cheap price considering it's loaded with hits. Of course, you get their signature #1 hit from 1984 "Karma Chameleon." Definitely an 80's favorite of mine. You also get the top 5 hit ballad "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" which is also very recognizable. Other top 10 hits include the catchy "Miss Me Blind," "Time (Clock of the Heart)," "Church of the Poison Mind," and another of my personal favorites "I'll Tumble 4 Ya." I also really like "Move Away" and even "The War Song." Any fan of 80's pop music or pop in general should be on the look-out for this collection!

Possibly The Best Budget-Line CD Ever?,
By The Scenario (Roseville, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 10 best series: The Best of CULTURE CLUB (Audio CD)
Culture Club have many compilations in print, most of them ruined by having Boy George's later inferior solo work tacked on to it. This budget-line CD is really all the casual fan needs, containing all of the band's Top 40 hits, including the much-maligned (but still fun) "The War Song". As is the case with most budget line CD's, I would imagine that the sound quality here isn't as good as on some of their more "proper" best-ofs. If you're that big of an audiophile, the recent "VH-1 Storytellers/Greatest Moments" collection would probably serve you better. My only complaint - the failed single "Mistake No. 3" (a decent ballad) isn't here. Small error though. This is a very good Culture Club greatest hits set.

All The Culture Club You Will Ever Need,
By A Customer
This review is from: 10 best series: The Best of CULTURE CLUB (Audio CD)
For about a year and a half in the mid 80's this band, most notably its flamboyant lead singer Boy George were everywhere. Some of their singles, while far from cutting edge, were catchy and entertaining, and this CD has them all, except the forgettable "Mistake Number 3." Once the novelty wore off the group faded into its current has been status, and on this CD you have all the Culture Club you will ever need.

An 80's "Signature" Band!,

If I were going to put together a time capsule of 80's music, this CD would certainly be one of the first selected. Boy George and Culture Club epitomized the "80's sound". CC was made for MTV and their music, like most of the great bands from the 80's, was upbeat and fun. I miss CC and the 80's. It was a great time that will live forever in my heart.

Check this out! I was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago, doing some cd shopping and came across this cd, and the moment I looked at the playlist I was hooked. I had no intention of even buying The Culture Club. I don't know about the one featured here, but mine was a import and contains 16 tracks, for 10 or 11 bucks(brand new).
1.do u really want to hurt me? 2.white boy 3.church of the poison minds 4.changing everyday 5.the war song 6.i'm afraid of me 7.it's miracle 8.the drea(from electric dreams) 9.time(clock of the heart) 10.the dive 11.victims 12.i'll tumble for ya 13.miss me blind 14.mistake no.3 15.the medal song 16.karma chameleon Now i'm not a huge huge fan, but i like them a lot. To me, this is all the culture club i will need. I guess some people are talking about some song "move away", well it's not on mine. I don't remember the song and dont miss it. I was 5 or 6 when they were at their peak, so i could be missing something, I doubt it though. If u find the import u should stop, pick up, and purchase.

I bought this CD for five bucks, and you certainly cannot go wrong with a price like that. This CD has all of CC's hits, including the critically panned Top 40 single, "The War Song". I always liked that song, and never understood why it was so hated. Yet listening to the song nowadays, it takes on a whole new meaning, and is still an enjoyable, yet politically-charged, song. Of course, you also have other classics like "Time (Clock of the Heart)" (a favourite), "Karma Chameleon" and the lovely ballad, "Victims".

A catchy collection of songs.,
This review is from: 10 best series: The Best of CULTURE CLUB (Audio CD)
I enjoy listening to this greatest hits package from Culture Club from time to time. Undoubtedly, Culture Club has put out some good and catchy material. This hits collection contains a total of ten tracks which come from four albums recorded between 1982-1986. All of the songs are in a straight-ahead pop musical direction. Boy George is a good and efficient vocalist. Culture Club's musicianship is also solid and satisfying. All of the tunes sport good production, too. I like all of the tracks, but the ones I enjoy the most are "Miss Me Blind," "Move Away," and "Time (Clock of the Heart)." "Miss Me Blind" is a cool and sprightly song that features a really nice and infectious guitar solo from Roy Hay. "Move Away" is spirited and full of energy, while "Time (Clock of the Heart)" sports a pleasing chorus. This hits package doesn't contain a biography of the band or song lyrics. I find this collection of songs to be solid, catchy, and enjoyable. Worth a listen.

You Know You Miss Them, You Really Miss Them, You Know You Miss Them Blind,
This review is from: 10 best series: The Best of CULTURE CLUB (Audio CD)
I remember reading some review (maybe in ROLLING STONE) about the time of Culture Club's first record that compared Boy George to some of the sweeter voiced, urban soul singers of the time. On the evidence of the elegant single "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," I probably would have concurred. But when I actually purchased KISSING TO BE CLEVER (great title, I'll give 'em that) I wound up quite disappointed. In fact, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" turned out to be the only track I really liked. Nearly every other CC hit from that and from subsequent albums followed a formula, a poppy, repetitive one at that. The choruses were nearly always one or two phrases repeated over and over (and over and OVER) again. I never quite tumbled for "I'll Tumble 4 You" and it seemed like a miracle to me that anyone ever gave "It's A Miracle" much airplay. "The War Song," their much maligned attempt at social consciousness, is thematically admirable (it was kind of a nice break from the insular love-and-heartbreak tunes they specialized in), but it was a tune that lent itself readily to parody. (Did any professional comedians do any bits making fun of the tune with lyrics like "War is stupid/and people are stupid/and this SONG is stupid"? Maybe it was just schoolkids I heard riffing on it that way, but that only proves the point that it was eminently mock-able.)
Actually though, those early critics weren't all that far off. Boy George really did have a pleasant voice, and, yes, you could tell that he listened carefully to smooth American soul singers. Their first single was so promising, but what came after was just a little too blah for my tastes. I find it hard to believe that the band's biggest hit was not "Hurt Me" but the inane "Karma Chameleon." BG's solo career DID have some highlights as well, esp. "The Crying Game," which suggested that he really could move beyond fluff when the material required him to. |
