I purchased The Best Damn Thing explicit/DVD deluxe, and all I have to say is that she has come a long way since Under My Skin three years ago! This album combines the perfect blend of classic punk-rock Avril with enough ballads to keep those satisfied who prefer the slower, emotional side of Lavigne! The best part of this particular edition is that the DVD (almost an hour long) shows all kinds of scenes with Avril recording and writing for this CD. Listen to it again after watching this, and you will get a better understanding of what her songs mean to her! So buy The Best Damn Thing right now, and discover the new, Limoncello drinking Avril Lavigne!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Avril is the real deal!, April 17, 2007
This review is from: The Best Damn Thing (CD/DVD Deluxe Limited Edition) (Audio CD)
I have her 2 previous releases, and I like them both very much. Her 3rd album is one of those "same but different" type of deals. I say this in a very positive way. If you enjoy her music in the past, I think you'll be pleased with this. I read a review and saw someone state Target and walmart only carry the edited version. This is not true in Targets case. I think one of the reasons I enjoy Avril's tunes are the use of the electric guitar , especially in the chorus of many tunes. Puts me in mind a little of Joan Jett. A few of the tracks made me think of Blink 182. And there was one track (sorry, typing from memory and don't remember name), where I swear I picked up a slight guitar sound from an 80's track. I always enjoyed the more rocker type female artists of the 80's (I'm 33, I know, kind of weird), and Avril kind of takes me back, her stuff is catchy, it rocks pretty good, and for the most part light listening. I haven't watched the dvd yet, but the cd is great. I've listened to it str8 through twice, and it's all good. There is one line that is laugh out loud bad though. She says at the end of a verse "I'm the one that wears the pants", then again loudly "I"M THE ONE THAT WEARS THE PANTS!", the way she emphasizes pants is hysterical. Too bad I doubt she intended it that way. I think any Avril fan should go snag a copy, and I think this album will also create new fans. Thanks for taking the time to read my review. P.S. I hate to be the 1st one not to give it 5 stars, but the "Pants" line has to drop it down one, lol. Recording that in the studio, she should've known that was WAY corny!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 * for the Record + 1 for the DVD, April 20, 2007
This review is from: The Best Damn Thing (CD/DVD Deluxe Limited Edition) (Audio CD)
Avril Lavigne's back and better then ever. One has to keep in mind that she has a very independent but distinct and original pop rock sound. Her lyrics are still based around a lot of relationship and dating issues, but she delivers her words like no other rock star out there. Teaming up with the guitarist and drummer from Sum 41 was the best thing Lavigne could have done to aide in her evolution. Their take on rock and pop made this record what it is; an in your face pop rocker album that gets one moving to the beat. Avril's musicality is still fairly simple in the means of progressions, harmonies, and melodies. But her delivery and simplicity is what makes the record so catchy. She knows how to use accidentals and dynamics masterfully for the style she has stuck with over the years, and this album shows it. All that's really missing are killer guitar solos and licks, but I'm sure Avril will get there someday. The record's first single "Keep Holding On" not only shows her potential in that regard, but it was also the soundtrack theme for the 2006 fantasy film: Eragon. Avril you rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars 3rd Album is AMAZING, April 18, 2007
This review is from: The Best Damn Thing (CD/DVD Deluxe Limited Edition) (Audio CD)
Avril's 3rd album is crazy cool. It's fast and upbeat and is over too soon. Every song is fun and uplifting. There are 3 ballads and everything else is fast and heavy on the drums and guitars. This music is the stuff that makes you wanna get up and dance. She is trying new things and it has turned out great. It's loud and all about girl power. Some people on here seem to be upset that it's not like her 1st album, but do you really want to listen to Complicated #2 or would you rather listen to something new and fresh? The dvd that comes with the cd is fun and you get to see her behind the scenes. I actually watched the dvd first and I loved it. The only complaint I have is that there are some songs that aren't included in the cd. Like Alone is a B side to the single Girlfriend and I will Be is only on iTunes. Other than that it's something that every Avril fan should own.

Well what can i say, im totally disagree with the 3 stars reviews and i give a 5 stars to the new album, i order the limited edition with the dvd and i have to say this record is awesome why? well, in the first record you have a pop-punk-rock avril lavigne, in the 2nd you have an alternative punk girl, and in this third record you have a pop-punk girl just like blink 182, she can mix all music styles without loose her punk image, i think the album is great is really addictive and contagious. Great JOB Avril, i really recommend this album...

3.0 out of 5 stars Time To Grow Up, June 7, 2009
This review is from: The Best Damn Thing (CD/DVD Deluxe Limited Edition) (Audio CD)
If you like the song "Girlfriend" a lot, and I mean a whole lot, then the limited edition CD+DVD of "The Best Damn Thing" from Avril Lavigne is probably for you. Out of the 17 tracks on the CD, three of them are versions of "Girlfriend", and if that isn't enough, then you will also have three video versions on the DVD. For me, this was much too much in the way of "Girlfriend". No doubt it has a catchy tune and the cheerleader like cadence to it is somewhat appealing; but the lyrics are juvenile and mean spirited. I am sure there are many who like this piece, given how much airtime it received, but for me it is only so-so. The lyrics might have been okay when Avril Lavigne was 17 and fresh on the scene, but a 22-year-old should have put high-school behind her. This leaves me with a rather mixed reaction to the song, and that carries over to the whole CD+DVD set as well.

"The Best Damn Thing" is Avril Lavigne's third album, and was released on April 17th of 2007. The opening track is the aforementioned "Girlfriend", though since it is the "Mature" version it includes some rougher language than what one sometimes hears on the radio. The second track is "I Can Do Better" and the obvious retort is that she definitely can (and fortunately does) do better, starting with the very next track. "Runaway" is where the album begins for me; it is the kind of song you want to hear from her, and it makes the listener remember how nice it was to finally hear some pop music with a rock base to it as opposed to the dance oriented offerings of so many others., "The Best Damn Thing", and "When You're Gone" are two more strong tracks which help make the opening two pieces a distant memory. This brings us to "Everything Back but You". One might think that I wouldn't like this song after bashing "Girlfriend", but I find this to be one of the songs I like the most on this album. I suppose it is because she is the person wronged and so when she lets loose with the name calling it is more acceptable, and when it comes down to it, it is a flat out hilarious lyric.

The second half of the original album opens with "Hot". It is decent, though not quite up to the level of some of the other pieces, and in particular to that of "Innocence" which follows it. The album then hits a brick wall with the horrible "I Don't Have to Try", which is easily the worst song on the album. I can appreciate that she is trying different sounds and styles, but this one just doesn't work at all. Things improve with "One of Those Girls" though it isn't as strong as the earlier pieces - it is much better than "I Don't Have to Try". "Contagious" is roughly similar in quality as "One of Those Girls". "Keep Holding On" is a decent closer for the original album, but the flow which had developed from "Runaway" through "Innocence" had already been disrupted and was not restored.

There are five bonus tracks included; the first two are "Alone" and "I Will Be", both of which are solid additions to the album, and the latter being the better of the two. Next is an acoustic version of "I Can Do Better" which is much worse than the electric version, and one has to wonder why that particular track would have been selected for an acoustic version. The final two tracks are two additional versions of "Girlfriend", the first being The submarines' Time Warp '66 mix, and the second being the Dr. Luke remix with Lil Mama, the latter of the two being the more interesting of the two.

There are two sections on the DVD, the first is a series of live tracks including the wonderful "Everything Back but You", "Girlfriend" (of course), "Hot", and "When You're Gone". The second section is the videos, which includes "Girlfriend", "When You're Gone", "Hot", and (you guessed it) "Girlfriend" - the Dr. Luke remix version with Lil Mama.

With nearly a quarter of the selections on the CD and DVD combined being variations of "Girlfriend" it is no wonder that one might have had enough of it by the time one has made it to the end. I am sure that it appeals to an audience which buys a lot of CDs, and that is no doubt why it is featured so heavily. In my opinion that is a shame, because Avril Lavigne may well have much more to offer if she is allowed to develop and grow as a songwriter and performer. There have been promising signs on all her albums, and let us hope that she moves in a new direction before she finds herself singing songs like "Girlfriend" in her 30s and 40s to a bunch of people trying to recapture their youth. This is an uneven album, with highpoints as good as anything Avril has done, and then there are some moments which make one cringe inside. All-in-all it is slightly above average, though I have to round it down to three stars.

"I Will Be" is not on this version of this CD. It's not on the CD nor the DVD, which has just an interview and a photo gallery. Someone else reviewed that it was here, and I read that it was supposed to be this edition. It seems to be on the Special Edition.

So I want to make clear if there's a confusion for other readers.
