Some short mixes, some long mixes, mostly cheesy dance, October 2, 2005

Water Dance has released a couple of excellent non-beatmixed compilations of hot dance tracks, but this disaster has way too many radio edits. This mix of filter disco, funky house, and cover tunes with just a hint of commercial euro trance thrown in is mostly uninteresting. You suffer through a really bad filter disco cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life," goofy remakes of Crystal Water's "Gypsy Woman" and Divinyl's "I Touch Myself" (a mix not on the original MASH CD single), a funky house cover of Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind," London Beat participating in a remake of their own "I've Been Thinking About You," as well as a clunky cover of Prince's "Controversy". The remake of CeCe Peniston's "Finally" is one of the strongest covers here, very euro dance, but a refreshing thumpin' version after the overplayed original. The remix of Jody Watley is just horrible, relying predominantly on her spoken parts of that recording. There are some bigger dance artists like Soda Club (doing Belinda Carlisle), Erasure, Inaya Day, Kate Ryan, Milk Inc, and even Jade 4U of Lords of Acid techno-rave fame, but they just can't save this hokey handful. It really feels like Water Dance is exploiting the current popularity of dance music and retro 80s remakes to mass produce second rate dance music. The should have made an "Ultimate Dance Remixed volume 2" instead. Now that was a compilation done right. Track times:
