5.0 out of 5 stars A steal, providing . . .
The audio quality is no better than fair (even allowing for early 1940s recording technology); the liner notes are sincere but not very helpful; the packaging is slick but misleading, offering photos from the entertainer's 1950s movies; finally, the man's extraordinary talent and special charisma simply cannot be captured by audio alone. If you don't know Danny Kaye, start with the movies. On the other hand, if you're already familiar with his career or simply wish to explore his early work, these 23 recordings are priceless "reference points," guaranteed to make you wish you were there. There has never been a "language performance artist" to equal this man. To a casual listener, he may sound "over the top." But check out, to take just one example, the written lyrics of Cole Porter's "Let's Not Talk About Love" for yourself. Try to speak them at a moderate tempo. And how about memorizing them while you're at it? Now listen to DK sing the song, and marvel at the paradox of the artist who was the James Joyce of popular culture yet capable of communicating with children (and with the child in each of us) like few others.

This CD will have you rolling on the floor. Danny Kaye is one of the best entertainers to ever live. His comedy is very lively, and unlike any you see today.

I too am looking for the Danny Kaye record of stories that include Nail Broth. It was a source of such delight for all of us. We have recounted the stories to friends over the years, wishing we could unearth a recording of this. If you have any information, please contact me with Nail Broth in the subject so I don't think your mail is spam. Thanks. Christy calewis55@foxinternet.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Kaye reads "Stories From Far Away Places", February 6, 2005

I, too, am searching for that wonderful children's LP of Danny Kaye reading "Nail Broth," "Master of All Masters (...You must call my pantaloons: squibs and crackers) and the Bantu tale of the name of the everbearing fruit tree (Uwangelema), among others. I can still hear it in my mind. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that this was part of a multi record set, an anthology that also included someone else reading such poems as "The Highwayman," "Gunga Din," and "Barbara Fritchie." Anyone with any information please contact me at rbda51@aol.com Sincerely, Rebecca

3.0 out of 5 stars Looking for Danny Kaye Children's Stories album, January 6, 2004

Like "A Music Fan" below, we are looking for an old (1950's) album of DK narrating children's stories. Some titles/topics are "Nail Broth", "The Wind and the Wall", "Uwungalayma",
"Squibs and Crackers", and more. I have searched the DK archives at the Lib of Congress and there is no mention of him doing children's stories. Anyone with info please share.

As a potential buyer, it would be very nice to see a list of titles of songs or stories that are on these CDs. I am looking for a specific story that was on an old record we had and have not seen it yet. It's called "Nail Broth". Thank You
I don't have the CD yet but was required to put a rating on it.
