Good Player - Rotten Documentation and Support,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best Data Cabo 64 MP3 Player (Electronics)
I just received this product today and I am listening to it now. My experience is as follows:1) Installed software and connected unit. Software would not recognize the player. 2) Reconfigured parallel port for ECP. Followed documentation exactly. Unit still not recognized. Tested port - port OK. 3) Called BestData support and after being disconnected several times I was told it would cost ... to find out why it wasn't working. Paid ... to have tech read the manual to me and tell me to download the latest software. 4) Downloaded software - didn't help. Went to BestData site ... to find my answer buried in a FAQ. A step not in the documentation and unknown to the tech support person, "You must click on the File menu and choose Connect And List before you can transfer files to the Cabo. " Also, make sure the "HOLD" button is off when attempting to activate the unit. 5) Finally got unit to download files. Surprisingly quick for a parallel connection. Once I got it working, I was impressed with it overall. I've been listening for several hours and the battery indicator still shows fully charged. Holds 12 songs and sounds excellent to me. Highest volume hurts my ears! Very light and somewhat cheap feel to the case but for ... with the rebate, it appears to be the best deal around on a 64MB unit. Don't bother calling tech support, just muddle through the inept documentation as best you can.

buy only if price is your number one priority,

well, i bought a cabo just because, well, it's cheap, and it has 64 megs of memory. i figured that at the worst, i could just return it if i was unhappy. unhappy is definitely what i was.the cabo isn't a horrible player, but it lacks a lot against new products like the rio 500. the main concern is upgradability. there really is none with the cabo. you accept the 64 megs you get, end of story. the other problem is the lcd display. a non backlit lcd really hurts your enjoyment of the unit in the dark, and it's pretty standard on most new players. on the good side, the sound quality is decent, and the headphones are very good for factory, but still, save up and buy a rio 500. leave the cabo for the bargain bins.

like other reviewers have said, don't listen to the negative reviews of this player. at 99 dollars (after the rebate) i certainly wasn't expecting to be listening to mp3s 30 seconds after opening the box, and you shouldn't either. read the manual. read the manual. read the manual. i didn't have any problems when i followed their pretty clear instructions from start to finish. the thing that gave me the most trouble was changing my parallel port to ECP or EPP or whatever it is. to do this, remember to go into the system settings when your computer is booting up. usually it is a button like F1 or F2. anyway, this player rocks. easy to use, fine sound quality, decent software. buy it! it is definately NOT worth the extra 100 or so bucks for the big names. i was debating about this forever and i think i made the right decision!

Perfect for Working Out,

Ignore the negative comments about this mp3 player. It works flawlessly as long as you remember to click on connect within the Cabo software. People often forget this step and most frustration lies in this. As for the reviews that the player is "buggy", that is simply not true. It works like a charm right out of the box. The sound quality is exceptional, remember to put in mp3s that are encoded at 128kb/s. It has less bass than normal but that is okay. The best setting out of the three is the "Classical" mode. Do not use the headphones provided, they are not representative of the sound quality the Cabo reproduces. Find a cheap pair of headphones like the Sennheiser MX400s or 500s and the sound is much cleaner. The construction of this unit are decieving because i have dropped it from a height of five feet and it was still playing without hesitation or pause. The only drawbacks this unit has is that it consumes batteries too fast, about 8 hours of playtime at the highest volume setting, the transparent blue case is tacky, and the parallel port connector. Otherwise, you will appreciate the aluminum brushed buttons which are a nice touch and the light weight for this unit (weighs almost as much as a motorola pager). The 64mb included are a bonus but you also have a memory card slot that can provide 32mb more. Fits about 16 songs at 128kb/s with just the 64mb of memory. Consider it as an attractive alternative to the other more commericalized mp3 players such as the NomadII or Rio 500/600 which are MUCM more expensive.

Great product, terrible documentation,
This review is from: Best Data Cabo 64 MP3 Player (Electronics)
Now that I have gotten this thing working, I love it. I find it fast and simple to download songs; it never skips, the sound quality is good. Not quite what you get from a premium sound system, but remember, this is a portable device - the sound is more than good enough for walking around, listening in a car, exercise, etc. It comes with software to convert your CDs to MP3 format. The documentation, on the other hand, is terrible. It might as well not have any. I spent hours thinking I had a defective product, until I realized that when the player is plugged into your computer and you open the "CABO Desk" software, you must select "Connect and List" from the file menu *before* doing anything else. Otherwise you will be unable to transfer music. They charge $7 for tech support, so I refused to call. The software to turn CDs into MP3s comes with no documentation whatsoever, but you should be able to figure it out in 15 or 20 minutes. On the whole, I recommend this product. Just be willing to take an hour or two to figure everything out.

what a great deal! sound quality is great, software easy, and with a cassette adapter, I love it in the car. Only downfall and I do agree is, no backlighting. Otherwise for the price, I,m buying one for my wife.

I used this product 5 hours before the batteries died. Pathetic in my opinion my Sony cassette player with moving parts lasts 25 hours with continuous use. The DSP modes are pathetic, the sound quality is terrible. The only way I could listen to any of the music was in the Classic DSP mode. There's not enough amplification to make some songs loud enough. The downloads were pretty fast, about 32 seconds for a 4mb song with ECP enabled. The player's mp3 internal software froze 3 times when I was listening to the player. Making all buttons stop functioning and I finally had to remove the batteries to reboot it. When it the software froze it got stuck on the same song. Very anonying. I think most will be unhappy with this item. Although the price and rebate offer isn't to bad for a 64mb player. However if your going to spend 10 bucks a month in batteries it ain't really worth it. Not to mention if it freezes everytime you use it. There wasn't much documentation with it, the uploading and downloading software for the player wasn't that great. Pretty pathetic actually. In short I was very unhappy with this player and I'd recemmend people look for a better more reliable item, because this player is pretty much a piece of junk.

This mp3 player is pretty decent. It has awesome sound quality, just as good as a cd's. It never skips, which is pretty good. The price is very cheap for a 64 mb player, I mean I can fit 15 - 25 songs. It could be alot easier to install. It took me forever before I could find out how to use it. There is no backlighting which it should have. But overall it is totally worth it.

I bought the Cabo MP3 player for myself about 2 weeks ago and it is amazing! I used to have a Diamond PMP300 SE 64mb, but this Cabo blows it out of the water! Its got just as much memory as Rio500 (64mb) Its got a voice recorder that the Rio500 DOESN'T have. Its got phone book that the Rio 500 DOESN'T have. The sound quality on the Rio500 is *slightly* better. You pay $80 less than for the Rio500! Soild buy all the way! GO CABO! |
