Book Description

For Calvin and Angela, trash day is the best day of the week to find great playtime items. But when they end up in a conflict situation that results in anger and put-downs, they find themselves searching for a way to communicate and arrive at a solution that makes both of them happy. Best Day of the Week has colorful illustrations and a child-friendly story. Children will engage in the story with childhood themes. Nancy Carlsson-Paige and Diane Levins companion book Before Push Comes to Shove offers adults more strategies and methods of teaching children conflict resolution skills.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This engaging urban story encourages childrens creative, imaginative play while also illustrating positive approaches to mediating interpersonal conflict. Angelas sensitive reactions to her friend Calvins hurtful remarks will help children learn to resolve disagreements without violence and to their mutual benefit. This book is a very valuable teaching tool for the classroom, as well as for the home. -- Alvin F. Poussaint, MD, Harvard Medical School

From the Publisher

Carlsson-Paige and Levin insist that part of the national solution to these recent school violence tragedies must be teaching younger children the conflict resolution skills they need for their livesskills like managing their anger and expressing strong feelings. By the time a child is eight years old, it becomes even harder to teach the nonviolent approaches they need for their emotions.

This review is from: Best Day of the Week (Paperback)
I'm sorry this book is out of print, because it is a book I would readily recommend to teachers of young children. I purchased a copy here, used, when the price was well below $10.
The story of Angela and Calvin resonated with my preschool class (and probably through Gr.2 or 3) as slightly older children who walk to school (without an adult!) and discover a discarded card table. Both have a very different plan for its use, and end up calling each other names ('stupid' Gasp!)before finding a compromise that incorporates both childrens's passions.
Some of my preschool class were most interested in the fact that they called each other names, and discussion focused on what they might have said to each other instead, to more accurately convey what they were feeling, rather than revert to name calling (Clearly, a familiar theme in most early childhood classrooms!)
For others, the idea of listening to the ideas that other children may bring to play was a message the teachers wanted to highlight. After reading the book and discussing it (nearly every page provoked some point of interest for discussion), we set it up with related props and refered to the message often as children came to the block area with different ideas of what to play.
The story touches on issues of gender, race, conflict, power, without preaching.
