Dean Martin "Cool Then, Cool Now" 2-CD/Book

Biography

It’s been nearly ten years since Dean Martin departed this earth, but the man’s stature as an artist and icon continues to grow. His importance to generations of music fans (not to mention aficionados of masculine cool) now far outstrips his former reputation as the tippler of the Rat Pack¹s tuxedoed triumvirate or Jerry Lewis’ crooning straight man. He was, simply put, a great singer ¬ the warm… Read more in Amazon's Dean Martin Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The King of Cool., June 1, 2006

Make no mistake, Dean Martin was probably one on the coolest persons ever to live. My son, who likes Rob Zombie and Green Day even likes Dean Martin. This is an awesome three CD box set that contains some of Dean's finest work. The sound quality is excellent and the selections are great. If you enjoy Dean Martin, you must get this set right away!

This is a splendid three CD box set with songs impeccably performed by the great Dean Martin. Dean's voice was incredibly smooth; it was truly an instrument Dean used to convey all the subtle nuances of the lyrics to every song he ever performed. The quality of the sound on this three CD set is excellent and the artwork is nicely done.

The first CD has many highlights although truthfully every track is a winner. "Memories Are Made of This" has Dean in his natural element; and the backup singers sound great--not that Dean ever needed backup but they do sound good anyway. "That's Amore" was always one of my very favorite Dean Martin songs; he aces this wonderfully. "Come Back to Sorrento" is nothing short of magical; I really like the way Dean delivers this with panache. In addition, "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" is very sophisticated in Dean's capable hands; "Kiss" and "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" also have fine musical arrangements to complement Dean's faultless vocals. "All I Do Is Dream of You" has Dean singing squarely front and center; and listen for "Standing on the Corner" which uses the brass and drums really well.

The second CD boasts so much--"Volare" is another stunner when Dean Martin performs it; and "Dream" is gorgeous! "Hey Brother, Pour the Wine" is most romantic; they could have done this without the backup vocalists but this is a very minor concern. "Buona Sera" charms me with that melody; and "Hit the Road to Dreamland" is a gem that sparkles brighter than silver and gold when Dean Martin sings this to perfection--and beyond! "Let Me Go" is another tune with a fine treatment by Dean Martin; and there's a number Dean does with Jerry Lewis entitled "Every Street's a Boulevard." Other highlights of the second CD include "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" with that big band sounding arrangement; "Just One More Chance;" "Two Sleepy People" and "Me 'N' You 'N' the Moon." Great!

"Return to Me" begins the third CD with a huge classic sung wonderfully by Dean; and I also enjoy "Baby, It's Cold Outside." The female vocalists harmonize very well; and "Goodnight Sweetheart" is very well done with nice percussion, too. "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" is another one of my very favorite tunes when Dean Martin does it splendidly; and "When You're Smiling" shines bright! "Under The Bridges of Paris" is excellent; and "Somebody Loves You" has a fine Latin flair. "Pretty As a Picture" is a standout with fine backup for Dean; he does this without ever letting go of a single superfluous note and I'm very impressed. "You Was" is terrific; and "Night Train to Memphis" is a great classic country tune. "On an Evening in Roma (Sott'er Celo de Roma)" was another hit for Dean; and the third CD ends with Dean Martin performing "Watching the World Go By." I love it!

Dean Martin gave us so much during his long career; thank goodness we have albums, CD box sets like this one and even DVDs so we can remember Dean and enjoy his artistry to this day. I highly recommend this for Dean Martin fans. People who like classic pop vocals would do well to add this to their collections, too.
