Why bother?,
By Todd Ebert (Long Beach California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
First of all, it seems very unfair to claim this as a "best of" for such a legendary, decades lasting, evolutionary musician like Dizzy Gillespie. Or at least append "best of" with "...during the seventies with Pablo Records". Moreover, this is clearly not the best period for Dizzy's music, by any stretch of the imagination; his best work of course coming 25 years earlier with the likes of Max Roach and Charlie Parker. The first two tracks (unicorn, free ride) represent an exercise in funk jazz, kind of like Dizz meets Chic. The next two (pensativo and exuberante) seem more interesting, and showcase more of a latin sound with complex rhythms and horn arrangements. I also like Al Gafa's guitar work on "behind the moonbeams". With that said, howerver, in my opinion this recording was made simply to sell more records, as there really is no point in making a "best of", when there is such little material to base it on. I would advise the record collector to pass this in favor of one of the earlier Pablo recordings that it was based upon.
