5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Classic Songs by Michael McDonald February 10, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I have been a longtime Doobie Brothers fan, both of the earlier Doobies headed by Tom Johnston and the latter Doobies headed by Michael McDonald. This CD features classic songs by Michael McDonald which take on more of a jazz-oriented, R & B, soulful feel. Although I enjoy the guitar-heavy and rock-oriented songs of Best of Doobies, volume 1, I really love this second Best of set, because the songs covered and written by McDonald, although different in genre, are really outstanding; just listen to "Little Darlin' I Need You, Echoes of Love, What a Fool Believes, Minute by Minute, Real Love, One Step Closer, and Dependin' on You." I also prefer the versions on this disc more than on the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits (Rhino label), because this disc contains the hit "Little Darlin' I Need You" and the full version of "Dependin' on You" with the complete guitar solo. The Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits does not have "Little Darlin' I Need You" and contains a shortened version of "Dependin' on You" (I always prefer the full versions!)
If you're a fan of Michael McDonald, you'll also love the CD "The Very Best of Michael McDonald," an excellent collection which contains many of his solo hits. This second Best of is a worthy sequel to Best of Doobies, Vol. 1. I highly recommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just Michael February 27, 2005
Format:Audio CD
While Michael McDonald was with the Doobie Brothers they recorded some of the most well-written, well-produced and most heart touching songs that have ever been recorded. It was not all just Michael McDonald's influence either. Pat Simmons was going thru a very creative time, having more creative freedom with Tom Johnston gone I guess, and Jeff Baxter fit in perfectly with the new soul/jazz sound. As a result, the Doobie Brothers won the respect of a much broader listening audience, and deservedly so. the songs on this CD will stand the test of time and touch many more hearts in the future generations. The list of pop bands out there who can write, perform, and produce material at this level is very short. Ignore the evil-doers on here who say that this is not the "real" Doobies, and get this CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit on the Skimpy Side July 12, 2001
Format:Audio CD
What can you say about this music that hasn't been said many times before? Most of the songs on this CD have been staples of classic rock for decades. It's just too bad that there is less than 37 minutes of music on this album. Would it have killed the record company to dig up a couple of unreleased cuts to fill out the disc?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Soul collection! August 18, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Man, Michael McDonald brought me to be a fan! I like this better than the first collection! It has all the soulful songs and more here and it turned me on the the more white soul music. The Doobies have class style and a great voice in blue eyed souler McDonald. By far the best songs are the tracks from minute by minute and you belong to me is a great song!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best of the Doobies, But OK December 25, 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Fraternal brothers they're not, but The Doobie Brothers are one of my favorite pop/rock groups from the 70s/80s, though I was just a kid when they were out. Michael McDonald is the biggest reason why I like this band. I always associate his voice with The Doobie Brothers; so, it's no big surprise that I love the following tracks: "You Belong to Me," "What a Fool Believes," and "Real Love." Besides these three choices, I'm not familiar with a lot of the other songs on here; thus my lower rating of this CD. But if you're a diehard Doobie fan, then "Best of the Doobies: Volume II" is worth a listen, in addition to their first "Best of" CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doobie Brothers Lite May 27, 2001
Format:Audio CD
The second of the Brothers' "Best" covers the downslide caused by Michael McDonald's rise to prominence in the group. While there are some worthwhile tracks. This is strictly Doobies 'after the fall.' For a better look at the group, you should seriously consider the "Best of" volume one. Or, if you must have these tracks, go for the box set "Long Train Runnin' 1970-2000" which also covers their rise from the ashes in the late eighties.

3.0 out of 5 stars McSOUL MAN March 18, 2006
Format:Audio CD
THE DOOBIE BROTHERS-BEST OF THE DOOBIES, VOLUME 2: The Doobies' tasty rock & roll vibe was seriously dilluted after switching out head honcho Tommy Johnston with the mellower Michael McDonald. There was a time in the late seventies when seemingly EVERYTHING on pop radio was awash in his smooth n' smokey, white RNB sound...huge hits like Cristopher Cross' RIDE LIKE THE WIND, ROBBIE DUPREE's STEAL AWAY, and KENNY LOGGINS' THIS IS IT were all heavily McDonald-influenced. BEST OF THE DOOBIES, VOL. 2 follows the band's middle of the road era, though surprisingly few bona fide "hits" are on display; only WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES and REAL LOVE even made the TOP 10. Marvin Gaye chestnut LITTLE DARLIN' I NEED YOU, jazzy groover MINUTE BY MINUTE, and YOU BELONG TO ME (which Carly Simon also charted with) all bear McDonald's dominating soul stamp; however, he's not offset often enough by Pat Simmons' grittier croon on songs like DEPENDIN' ON YOU, the one semi-rocker here. Overall, this is a pleasurable, if tame listening experience...scarcely a match for the knuckles-to-the-fretboards punch of the original BEST OF THE DOOBIES.

2.0 out of 5 stars Vol. 2 not as big as Vol. 1.
The Doobie Brothers just have solid music. Vol. 1, released in 1976, was still quite good and, to me, defined the idea of a "Greatest Hits" album. Read more
