Book Description

Desperate to track down her ex-husband who disappeared along with their son, Grace Stevens delves into his past and uncovers evidence of a shocking dual life. The man she thought was an ordinary computer consultant is in fact a former high-ranking Special Forces officer with unique skills in military intelligence. With nowhere to turn she is forced to plead for help from Keith King, the one man she hoped to never see again. Against her better judgment she’ll have to put her child’s fate into his hands.

Keith has officially hit rock bottom. Framed for the theft of deadly missile components, the cynical Special Forces officer is in danger of losing the only thing he can count on: his career. His one shot at clearing his name lies in locating Grace’s ex, who was working with Keith on a secret mission to take down a cutthroat military traitor. But to team up with Grace he’ll need to spend 24/7 with a woman who has every reason to hate him. Out to use each other for their own agenda, desperate mother and disillusioned soldier find they must work together to stay alive, and in the process discover that sometimes even the best of enemies fall in love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great balance of romance and suspense May 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tightly written and well-balanced romantic suspense story about a mother on a quest to save her son and a fallen hero on a quest for redemption. The best part about this book for me was the action scenes. They were fast-paced and moved the story as well as the romantic involvement between Grace and Keith along with the right sense of tension and adventure. It's always difficult to involve children in a romance or suspense plot, but I felt Her Own Best Enemy managed to handle Grace's concern for her son, Ryker, and her growing feelings for Keith in a believable way. At times it felt like the past connection between Grace and Keith was just thrown in to add obstacles in a scenario that was already chock-full, but it was only a minor distraction for me as the characters and the adventure were executed really well.

There are also some nice hints dropped in of other Special Ops team members who are fascinating characters in their own rights that I'm sure have stories of their own coming up.

This book held my interest all the way through keeping me in the story, clicking pages, and wanting to know more. I thought it was a good mix of drama, suspense, action, and romance, and yet not too graphic at all. Both the dialogue and pace flowed very smoothly. I found a few scenes to be very touching and emotional. The characters of the hero and heroine were well-developed and the author's writing made me feel as if I were inside their heads knowing their thoughts. Grace was believable as mother who would do anything to find and protect her son. The depiction of how Keith regretted and overcame his bad boy past was plausible - even if just a tad overdone, it emphasized just how much and why his teenage years and military career defined him as a person, and his decisions/actions towards the end were quite consistent and credible, in my opinion. I would have liked a bit more interaction between Grace and her sister, Becca, and more information than what was given about Becca's condition and how she coped all these years because she didn't seem to be as bad off as Grace made her out to be, but even without this, the author delivered a very satisfying story and conclusion. Her Own Best Enemy is the first book I've read by this author and I will look forward to reading her future releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense! April 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this book! My time is limited and I'm very picky about what I read. Her Own Best Enemy blew me away from the first page - I couldn't put it down. Keith is one of my favorite heroes ever and Grace is a strong, capable heroine whose love for her son had me tearing up a couple of times. The villain is well done and very believable. I especially liked the way his agenda tied into the overall plot. I can't recommend this book enough. It's a quick read but the characters stay with you long after you've finished.
