1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Like The Best, January 9, 2001

This is Ernie K-Doe, but it is not his original hits. He is singing them again and they just don't sound the same. It is amazing that some artists don't understand that fans loved their original hits.

K-Doe's New Orleans style back up works its' brains out keeping it all movin' ahead...and overall it works. "Mother-In-Law" is fine, though the original is all you need.
We get a nice medley of Joe Turner songs, "Shake, Rattle, and Roll", including spirited references to "Honey Hush", "Shake...", and "Flip, Flop, and Fly'.
Another mid-'50s workout, on "I Got A Woman", also has some spark, a respectful instrumental arrangement.
Other R & B tributes are to James Brown and Joe Tex, on the dancer "Do You Want Some", I guess conceived as an answer to songs like "It's Too Funky In Here" and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman", but the arrangement can't make up it's mind whether to syncopate or just let the Disco beat prevail.
So many R & B and R & R artists cut albums worth of self-covers and usually they don't work. We have here an intermnittently successful CD by an acclaimed artist, best known for one huge hit in 1961; now known as featured attraction at his own Crescent City club.
The good liner notes suggest that present day Ernie K-Doe is best appreciated in a small club buzzing with uptempo blues and soul.
