5.0 out of 5 stars The very best of Eva Cassidy in a single album November 22, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
Eva Cassidy was just 33 years old when cancer took her in 1996, yet her breathtakingly beautiful voice lives on. As a vocalist and guitarist, she interpreted melodies from a wide variety of musical categories - jazz, blues, soul, gospel, folk, country, and pop - infusing all of her songs with authentic emotion and a wonderful warmth, purity, and power that made them both moving and memorable.

Performing and recording in the Washington DC area during the early 90s, Eva released only two albums before her untimely demise. She never landed a contract, mainly because she stubbornly insisted on singing and playing songs that spoke to her, regardless of genre, and this prevented her from fitting into a commercial pigeonhole. In the wake of her enormous posthumous popularity on both sides of the Atlantic, however, no fewer than eight collections of her music have been produced.

"The Best of Eva Cassidy" is indeed her best, containing as it does a full 20 tracks over 80 minutes and including most of the songs for which she is best known. A few of my favorites are missing, of course, like "At Last," "The Water Is Wide," "Blues in the Night," and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," but that's inevitable when you assemble a compilation.

So if you can buy only one of Eva's albums, make it this one. However, if her music touches you like it does me, you owe it to yourself to check out a few of her other collections. She never sang a song that wasn't vital and compelling. And if you'd like to know more about her life and work, search for an excellent 18-minute video from ABC's Nightline program entitled "The Eva Cassidy Story."

2.0 out of 5 stars Should Have Been WAY Better, Too Bad, Sorry, Eva! December 3, 2012
By Syneph
Format:Audio CD
I'm a jazz DJ, huge lover of great singers, especially Eva. I have her entire non-bootleg catalog and have listened to every tune many times over the years. I made my own Best of Eva compilation last year. Though they call "Songbird" a compilation, it really isn't what I'd call a Best Of, more like a sampler. Eva badly needed a Best of compilation that does her justice. Sure, it's all subjective, but I am truly shocked by what's included here and what's not. No "Wayfaring Stranger," unbelievable! And possibly her best overall album, "Live At Blues Alley," is WAY under-represented here. I love all the genres Eva covers equally well, no prejudices at all. I think this alleged Best Of Eva disc is a huge disappointment. I think first time Eva buyers would get the most banging great Eva music for the buck by purchasing "Songbird" and "Live At Blues Alley" and go from there if you want to dig deeper. But her other albums are uneven compared to the 2 I just mentioned, though there are fine moments there, as well. Or maybe you could talk me into making you a copy of my 2-disc Best Of Eva if you're nice! Eva really grabs your heart and soul, doesn't she? Wish you could hear the phone calls I got during my jazz shows when listeners heard Eva the first time in my shows. Just like what happened at the BBC and Nightline. I cannot recommend this disc because it should have been SO much better. Here's the track listing, in sequence, for my own 2-disc compilation "Best Of Eva," compiled from all her non-bootleg discs: DISC 1 1.Wayfaring Stranger 2.Honeysuckle Rose 3.I Can Only Be Me 4.I Could Have Told You So 5.At Last 6.Take Me To The River 7.Natural Woman 8.Dark End Of The Street 9.Stormy Monday 10.I'll Go Crazy 11.Blue Skies 12.I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again 13.Let The Good Times Roll 14. 5.0 out of 5 stars No more Eva Cassidy anthologies, please... November 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Apparently, this looks like the last of the late Eva Cassidy's recordings has been released to the general public, and the powers who are responsible for her catalogue have found it necessary to release one more anthology of some of her best known work. If there are still any people who have not had the opportunity to experience Eva's recordings up until now, I suppose this is as good a place to start as any, but I regard it as cheap and tasteless marketing. I have every single one of her compact discs, and all of the songs in this package appear elsewhere.

That being said, there hasn't been a female vocalist since Eva's passing in 1996 who has appeared on the music scene who can hold a candle to her genius. All the recordings in this package, especially "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", "Kathy's Song", and "Fields Of Gold", are quintessential, and Eva made them hers. I am disappointed, however, that a song written by another late Washington, DC area musician, Roger Henderson's "A Penny To My Name", was not included, having done exceptionally well in Europe upon its release a decade ago.

If you have been living under a rock for the last twenty years and are just discovering who Eva was, feel free to start here, but don't stop here. All of her albums are treasures, and you need to hear all of them to grasp just who this talented woman really was.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Eva Cassidy February 10, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have recently been introduced to Eva Cassidy's music. I love it. I find her voice beautiful, soothing, unique, with a wide range and sensitive control. I like her creative interpretation on old melodies as well as what she does with songs I've never heard. I listen to this album nearly everyday. dcd

So sad that the world lost this beautiful voice too soon. There is such a wonderful depth of emotion in her singing that is drastically missing from most singers today. Read more
