Product Description

Serendipity TOXIN SHIELD is a crib mattress cover designed as an impermeable layer to prevent toxic gasses, allergens and other hazardous chemicals coming from your crib mattress from reaching your baby's sleep environment. What makes Serendipity different from other mattress covers? * Unlike typical mattress covers, the Serendipity cover blocks toxic gasses, hazardous chemicals, and allergens in your babies' mattress. * The Serendipity Mattress Cover is made from an engineered pure polymer that contains no additives to leach into your babies sleeping environment. Vinyl and other types of plastic covers contain hazardous chemicals like fire retardants, plasticizers, Phthalates and biocides that can leach out of the cover creating a hazardous environment for your baby. * Best Day Ever, the maker of the Serendipity Mattress Cover works with the non-profit No More SIDS Foundation to get mattresses covered at day care centers around the country. Best Day Ever donates one Serendipity Mattress Cover to No More SIDS Foundation for every cover it sells. No More SIDS estimates more than 700,000 mattresses covered without a single SIDS death reported.

I purchased this as a recommendation from a friend, and due to the SIDs hype. My daughter is 5 months old, and so far so good regarding SIDs, but I wouldn't credit this mattress pad. I do find it odd that it's really just an extra thick plastic bag over our mattress, but it works just fine. I was able to get it on the mattress easily, and I placed a fitted sheet over it as recommended. Everything fits perfectly, and I do not hear that plastic sound as my daughter rolls around on her mattress. I have never heard a loud crinkle sound of plastic, and I don't even notice that it's on the mattress. Worth the money for me, since it helps me feel better that I am somehow reducing her chance of SIDs...

I've used similar gas-impermeable covers to protect my older children from mattress toxins. This one was far better design and easier to use on crib, pack-and-play and co-sleeper mattresses. Price was better and the shipping was incredibly fast too. Full vented bottom ensures that there are not air pockets to push out after you put the normal baby bedding on it.

Like many who find themselves considering buying this cover, we looked into SIDS, got scared, read a lot of stuff about SIDS in Australia, considered buying a very expensive new mattress instead of the used one a friend gave us, and finally just bought this.
What you get is a sheet of plastic that is somewhat difficult to attach to the mattress, but not impossible. Once it's on and you feel like you've done what you can, you can move on and worry about other things instead.

This is one of my must have baby items.
I have a reflux baby and reflux babies often prefer to sleep on their side or belly (or flat out refuse to sleep on their backs!). Being familiar with the New Zealand study and toxic gas theory, this mattress wrap gave me piece of mind when putting my baby to sleep on his side or tummy.
It was easy to put on, directions were clear. And it's not nearly as loud as I was lead to believe. It's been on my son's crib mattress since he started sleeping in the crib so he's never known any different and the noise from it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

This mattress cover was exactly what I needed. As soon as I figured out that my 2 toddler mattresses were off-gassing chemicals, I felt duped. I had gotten the kids very nice mattresses, couldn't afford to upgrade to the pricey organic ones, and needed a solution ASAP! So, at the time, this was a perfect quick solution. But now that I'm out of twin-newborn-survival-mode, I realized that I paid $60 for some cheap plastic sheeting. I could have just bought an $8 roll at Walmart and cut it down to size. Oh, and their adhesives didn't work so well after I kept wrapping the mattresses too loose and pulling it off over and over again, so I had to seal it with packing tape. Which doesn't work so well either. Overall great concept but WAY overpriced.

Full of new-mom paranoia while expecting my second daughter, I decided a mattress cover was worth the investment, since I am concerned about asthma, SIDS, etc. (What parent isn't?) So, I ordered this one out of the many similar choices on the Internet. It is a heavy plastic bag (heavy, as in, thicker plastic than a garbage bag) designed to fit a baby mattress. It has a long slit that faces down toward the ground on the underside of the crib mattress so that any "fumes" are expelled away from baby. I'm hopeful it will do what it advertises.
I did not love the experience of putting it on the crib mattress. I realize this is not a huge deal, and trust me, I've not lost any sleep over it, but sealing this thing tightly around the crib mattress was just a bit more of a hassle than I bargained for with my 34-week baby belly. It is a bit bigger (wider and longer) than the Serta mattress we are using, so there was folding and wrapping involved, much like if you were trying to wrap baby's mattress tightly and neatly in wrapping paper. The problem was the adhesive on the ends - it didn't work. I don't know if I got an old one that was sitting around a warehouse for a long time or what, but this adhesive strip would not stick to the plastic for anything. So, out came the Scotch tape. Not sure what, if anything, that does to the functionality of the product, but this mattress cover wasn't going on without some other type of adhesive. So, in effect, I did wrap the mattress like a present, using slippery, stiff, awkward wrapping paper. Also, because the bag was so much bigger than the standard mattress we're using, I was unsure how big to leave the slit on the bottom. Was it OK if it was overlapped? Should I make sure to leave it wide open? No guidance in the instructions, so it just is how it is.

Purchased this for my grandchild... it doesn't take much reading to confirm what I already know. 40 years ago SIDS was not a moniker, autism was rare, and asthma a thing that tended to run in family lines. With the amount of PVC used to most manufacturing techniques today, this inexpensive vapor barrier is worth every penny and adds to our hopes of seeing our granddaughter growing into a happy and healthy child able to experience the full richness of life.
