4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty, easy-to-make recipes December 28, 2008
My husband and I enjoyed takeaway curries in the UK, so we thought we'd try cooking them at home. This is my first Indian recipe book, and we've enjoyed the recipes so far. We prepared vegetable samosas based on the book for our Indian friends, who gave the dish their thumbs up. The recipes seem complex (usually with 10 or more ingredients each) but the book gives step by step instructions that are easy to follow. The photos are beautiful. The authors wrote an interesting introduction on the general principles of Indian cooking and added a helpful list of essential ingredients and spices, utensils and equipment. Each recipe also has Cook's Tips (e.g. substitutes for ingredients that are not available) and Nutritional Notes . The book covers everything from appetizers and main dishes to desserts, relishes, chutneys and breads (which is great because I can make my own nan bread now). At the back of the book there's also a list of suppliers based in the US, UK and worldwide where you can order ingredients and equipment that are not available locally. Overall, I would recommend this as a good first book for Indian cooking. I would have given a rating of 5 stars, if not for the price on Amazon, which is ridiculous (almost $100)! I bought my copy at Barnes&Noble for $9.98. I thought I could get a better price at Amazon because I plan to buy a copy to give as a gift. You won't be disappointed with the book, but shop around for a more reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Indian.... May 16, 2008
By Karen
This cookbook is awsome! Not only are the recipes very, very good....there is a photo for every single one which I like. There is also a section that lists and describes all of the spices that are used in Indian cooking. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy Indian cooking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mine needed tweeking for my own tastes July 25, 2011
This book was great to teach me some basics of Indian cooking, it's history, and knowledge of spices. I do find, however, that most of the recipes that tell you to add water, the water is just too much. I use half the amount of water the recipe calls for or else I have a watery mess. I also always use double the amount of garlic and chili pepper that is suggested. I use heaping spoonfuls of spices, so for this reason my recipes don't really turn out bland. My recipes have turned out really well after my own changes. I do use the tikka/curry paste recipes in the front of the book as opposed to buying store bought. My naan recipe didn't turn out the first time, but after watching a youtube video of an Indian woman making naan, I learned about using a pizza stone in the oven at the broil setting (or on a stone in a grill). The naan turned out much better. I suggest this book to someone who is trying it at home for the first time because of the learning of spices and history. If you are the type of person who can make judgments about how to tweek the recipe to suit your tastes, then this is a good starting place. I did only pay 7.99 for this book new at a book store, so I don't think I'd pay 30+ dollars for it knowing that the recipes needed some work on my part.
