Book Description

Fantastic Audio Series May 16, 2002
This release features edgy new stories by hot new talents, and old favorites from Paul Anderson, Ted Chiang, and Ursula K. Le Guin. Silverberg and Haber say it best: "The present anthology is intended to show reach and range as it is demonstrated nowadays in the shorter forms of fiction." You will find very little that is formulaic here, although we have not ignored any of fantasy's great traditions. There are stories set in the familiar quasi-medieval worlds to which modern readers are accustomed, and others rooted in the authentic myth-constructs of high antiquity, and several that depend for their power on the juxtaposition of fantastic situations and terribly contemporary aspects of modern life on Earth. There are philosophical and theological speculations. There is even one science-fiction story -- although one that carries scientific thinking to a fantastic extreme -- by way of showing that science-fiction, rather than being a genre apart, is simply one of the many branches of fantasy literature. These stories -- which we think are the best short fantasies published in 2001 -- are reassuring proof of fantasy's eternal power even in this technological age.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Karen Haber is the art book reviewer for "Locus," and profiles artists for both "Realms of Fantasy" and "Galaxyonline," She is co-editor, along with her husband, Robert Silverberg, of the Bantam/Spectra science fiction anthologies, "Universe I "and "II,"
John Howe is universally considered to be the foremost Tolkien illustrator (along with Alan Lee). He worked closely with director Peter Jackson on the art design for the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy.

Philip Wylie (1902-71) is the author of "Gladiator" and the coauthor of "When Worlds Collide," both available in Bison Books editions. Acclaimed science-fiction writer Robert Silverberg is the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Hugo and Nebula awards, and the Grand Master designation from the Science Fiction Writers of America, the highest science-fiction honor available. He is the author of "Lord Valentine's Castle,"

Harlan Ellison is one of the world's most respected writers of fiction. He has won more awards for his fiction than any living writer.

Ursula K. Le Guin is the author of more than one hundred short stories, two collections of essays, four volumes of poetry, and nineteen novels. Her best-known fantasy works, the Earthsea books, have sold millions of copies in America and England, and have been translated into sixteen languages. Her first major work of science fiction, "The Left Hand of Darkness", is considered epochmaking in the field because of its radical investigation of gender roles and its moral and literary complexity.

Three of Le Guin's books have been finalists for the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and among the many honors her writing has received are the National Book Award, five Hugo Awards, five Nebula Awards, the Kafka Prize, a Pushcart Prize, and the Harold D. Vursell Award of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

From AudioFile

According to its editor, this collection of short pieces may change listeners' views on the scope of fantasy literature. Each tape is labeled with the name of the story, the author, and the reader. Different readers are featured in each story. Ursula Le Guin, the only author who narrates, is one of the best in the collection, and her performance gives the impression of an intimate reading among a group of friends. As a sampler of fantasy, Silverberg's collection has a lot to offer both novices and aficionados. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
