Editorial Reviews

Ever since the movies began, filmmakers have used classical music to great effect. This low-priced boxed set contains 100 of the great classical masterpieces and cinematic themes featured in some of the most memorable movies of all-time. Includes timeless orchestral works, piano pieces and opera excerpts by Mozart, Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Strauss and more, alongside newer classics from our great film composers like John Williams and Ennio Morricone.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked February 8, 2008
Format:Audio CD
As I type the words to this review, I am listening to Nessun dorma (Puccini, Turandof) over and over again from the CD collection I am now writing about. Good music is supposed to inspire, and this one inspires.

This six CD collection is from Best Film 100: The Great Blockbusters, The Classic Movies, Favorite Movies, The Piano at the Cinema, Opera at the Cinema (my favorite), and Baroque Goes to the Cinema.

The ironic part about listening to music from the movies is that it mainly goes unnoticed by people who would never claim to be classical or opera lovers in the first place. I'm sure that Mozart's, "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" fits perfectly in the movie "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," a movie I seem to continually miss, and it is also featured in "There's Something About Mary" a movie I continually wish I had missed.

Only a few are not from classical writers, but possess melodies that fit a particular mood or time of day e.g. the themes from "Schindler's List," "You Only Live Twice," or "Saving Private Ryan[`s,]" "Hymn to the Fallen" are equally moving.

And that is why I recommend that you start moving to get "Best Film 100" music about the mov-ies.

After all, "Life is Beautiful," Barcarolle: Offenbach, Les Contes d'Hoffmann.

P.S. Since this site let's you play it, try CD 5: Nos. 9, 17, and 18. Whoof!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing timeless collection, with just one flaw.... November 26, 2008
Format:Audio CD
As mentioned this is a great collection for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the classical genre. I purchased this collection for the sheer amount of Mozart available, but I would say there is one flaw.

It mentions the Film Name on the track, instead of the Original name of the compositions. Although I can understand this is the connection between the CD and customer, however I would have also liked the real composition names, so next time I'm drunk on wine with friends I can drop the M-Bomb (Mozart).

Despite that I'm still giving it 5 stars, as the product more than makes up for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music collection October 8, 2007
Format:Audio CD
It has basically everything that you would want in a film collection. My favorite is the first CD that features the great blockbusters. Please be aware that the majority of the music is comprised of "classical" music. This is often misleading because usually one expects to listen to the "theme music" of each movie, but that is not the case.

This is a tremedous amount of music for the price. There are about 90 selections from about 90 movies are include. Most of the music is classical and Mozart is the most frequent composer on the 6 CDs with no less than 24 selections. The first CD is devoted to the great blockbusters and contemporary composers are well represented. James Horner's theme from Titanic, John Barry's theme from You Only Live Twice, and Howard Shore's theme from the Lord of the Rings are stupendous. A delightful surprise is JOhn William's Fawkes the Phoenix from one of the Harry Potter films. It resonated with the great Vaughn Williams. The case holding all 6 CDs is a bit awkward. In the second CD Morricone, the contemporary Italian composer, is represented with Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission, a hauntingly beautiful composition. Also included is the odd Jazz Suite No. 2 by Shostakovich which Stanley Kubrick selected as the theme song for Eyes Wide Shut. It is a manic dark waltz that is hard to get out of your head. A standout in the third CD is Pergolesi's Stabat Mater from The Talented Mr. Ripley. The fourth CD is devoted to piano selections and for once Mozart is well represented but does not dominate for Chopin offers 6 gems including the subtle Prelude No. 15 in D Flat from the movie Face/Off. The fifth CD is devoted to opera where a sublime Le nozze di Figaro - Canzonetta sull'aria by Mozart takes the Prize. This selection is from both Babette's Feast and The Shawshank Redemption. Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel dominate the 6th CD. All in all, this is a very good selection of music by outstanding orchestras, pianists, and composers and you can not argue with the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars More classical than just film January 8, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Don't let the titles of the films lull you into thinking this is mostly film music. In fact, it is mostly classical music sourced from different films, with some arrangements on the first CD from popular films included. Having said this, it is nonetheless an excellent collection of works and styles and very accessible to those who may not listen to much classical. With six discs there is plenty of listening, and some of the works will definitely take you back to the films they are found in.

3.0 out of 5 stars 100 Best Classics from the movies April 14, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A pleasant set of disks. Good performances and decent quality sound. Disappointing in that I was expecting 100 Main themes from movies, and there are only 3 or 4. The rest are classical music that happens to have been used in movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Know Nothin' 'bout.... January 12, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I always like these miscellaneous collections when it comes to classical music. They're a good starting point for listeners who are not versed in the composers and their music. This one is very expansive and includes many artists you may not have heard before. If you've seen the movies, you'll like listening. I was pleasantly surprised to find the films go back decades. Buy the collection along with your book choice and enjoy.
