great collection of early blues,

This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Frank Stokes is not as well known as, say, Mississippi John Hurt, or the great Delta bluesmen. But he is a fantastic player and singer in his own right. Much of this music combines influences from blues, ragtime, and string bands, which makes it a great window onto a bygone time and place. Also, while Stokes is a great player in the alternating-bass fingerpicking style that combines rhythm and lead, this CD also contains some beautiful songs in which he accompanies a fiddle player whose playing is haunting and lovely. There is some hiss, but every song is easily listenable, and Yazoo Records has done as good a job as I imagine can be done given the limitations of the original 78's--to me it just adds to the time-machine ambiance.
