5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Frankie Avalon April 5, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD for Frankie's mega-hits, as Venus, Dede Dinah, Bobby Socks to Stockings, etc. All of these songs are originals and are just as good now as when they were first released. Imagine my surprise when I listened to the songs that I didn't remember and found them to be equally enjoyable. Why the release "Where Are You" never became a #1, I'll never know. It's one of the best I've ever heard. Do youself a favor and buy this CD. You'll enjoy it for Frankie's biggest hits. But you'll love it for the songs that weren't.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Frankie Avalon CD You'll Ever Need June 18, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Although "Beauty School Dropout" is missing (perhaps for licensing reasons), all of Avalon's hits are here in their original versions. The often maligned teen idol landed lots of pop hits, including the lushly Latin-flavored "Venus" and the harmonically adventurous "Why." Considering that only five of the 18 tracks on this CD didn't reach the Pop Top 40 charts, this is the quintessential collection for any fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Even Half Dozen Short Of Being A Complete "Best Of" August 28, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Not counting the 1976 re-recording of Venus which reached # 1 Adult Contemporary(AC)/# 46 Billboard Pop Hot 100/# 97 R&B that March on Dee-Lite 1578 b/w a "disco" version of the same song, Frankie Avalon (born in Philadelphia on September 18, 1939) had 24 nationally charted Top/Hot 100 hit singles between 1958 and 1963 for Chancellor Records, including seven double-sided hits, and in this compilation Varèse-Sarabande gives you 18 by this former child prodigy trumpet player.

Having learned to play the instrument very well at a young age, in 1951, when just 12-years-old, he became part of a band known as Rocco & The Saints, a group that included another future star from the area, Bobby Rydell. Discovered by a talent agent when performing at a house part for singer Al Martino in 1952, Frankie was signed for an appearance on Jackie Gleason's TV show as well as Paul Whiteman's Teen Club TV show out of Philadelphia. In 1954, at age 15, he cut two trumpet records for RCA Victor's "X" subsidiary under his own name which, while not charting nationally, did well on a regional basis: Trumpet Sorento/The Rock ("X" 0006) and Trumpet Tarantella/Dormi, Dormi ("X" 0026 - 1954). Those sides are currently impossible to find in a quality CD. Then, under the sponsorship and tutelage of Bob Marcucci and orchestra leader Peter DeAngelis, he opened the Teen And Twenty Club in Philadelphia where, among others, he was joined by Rydell and another budding star from the area, Fabian.

In 1957 he began recording for Marcucci's new Chancellor Records, based in Philadelphia where, following a couple of debut misses, he would go on to have a solid recording career to the early 1960s, ably assisted by his appearance in the 1957 film Jamboree (aka Dic Jockey Jamboree in the U.K.
