5.0 out of 5 stars Truly the best of Hubbard., January 27, 1999
By A Customer

Every now and then there comes an artist who is able to do what he does best, well. That time has come. Freddie Hubbard examines several themes this time, each handled with the skill of the grandmaster. From the pace and rythymic backbone of 'Red Clay' to the gradual release of 'The Summer Knows' Hubbard blows with part poise and part passion each according to situation. This album illustrates Hubbard's improvisatory skill, from between the chords to public or studio showings. On this masterpiece Hubbard shows that as an artist his concentration and impulse easily are the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent CD that you have to listen all the way through!, November 14, 2000

I Highly recommend this Disc to any young trumpet player looking to start a jazz collection. No one can match up to Freddie Hubbard, I got this CD 2 years ago and it rarely leaves my disc changer. This is a well rounded album displaying a full spectrum of Hubbard's raw talent and ground breaking sounds. Also to the Hip-hop enthusiast, listen to the first song(Red Clay), you will find that this melody is sampled on A Tribe Called Quest's 1993 "Midnight Mauraders."

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Not Quite the Best, January 11, 2007

Back in the day -- the 1970's -- Freddie Hubbard was my second favorite jazz trumpet player, after Maynard Ferguson. I bought this CD mainly because all my 30-yer-old cassette tapes are starting to fall apart. While this CD certainly showcases the talent of Freddie Hubbard, it doesn't show his "best." As in the case of many "greatest hits" albums, it leaves you with a lingering question -- Who is the wiseguy that picked these particular songs? Still, I give it 4 stars just because Freddie Hubbard plays such a great horn. Jazz hasn't been the same since Kenny G and all the other " soft" or "smooth" jazz artists hit town.

Music just isn't made like this anymore. A full orchestra backing up one of the greatest musicians of our generation. The music is very warm and old-school jazzy to the ear. It's a must have for any collection. Get this one before it goes out of print.

Freddie Hubbards distinct fiery sound rates him at the top of my list. His quality hit Red Clay is one of my favorite tunes of all time. The bass line and the horns along with the first chorus by Freddie is amazing. A truly Quality song
