5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE, October 13, 2005
By
Jukebox Dave (RECORD TOWN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of Free (Audio CD)
FREE-BEST OF FREE: Before Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke joined the slicker rock supergroup Bad Company, they pounded out a big bloozey beat in Free, known to casual followers mainly for the Top 40 warhorse ALL RIGHT NOW. But dig a little deeper, and you'll be rewarded with a powerful pastiche of rootsy rock, folk, and RNB in the vein of fellow Brits Savoy Brown and the early Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac. Rodgers' raw-throated howl and unique phrasing coupled with doomed guitarist Paul Kossoff's righteous riffing on FIRE AND WATER, CATCH A TRAIN and THE HUNTER make for an explosive earful here. For contrast, the hypnotic instrumental MOUTHFUL OF GRASS (ALL RIGHT NOW's flip side) is three and a half minutes of mellowed out nirvana. They say the best things in life are Free...don't know 'bout life, but musically speaking, that statement holds true.

RATING: FIVE FREE FALLS

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories Of A Great Band !, May 6, 2005
This review is from: Best of Free (Audio CD)
It's been roughly 30 years since I owned Free's 8-track tape, Fire And Water, (I wore it out) and this,Best Of Free, CD sure brings back some precious memories from that old 8-track. I knew then that I was listening to a very special talent that this band had. Time slips by but ya know something..... I still remember. Somewhat spotty but I remember.
This disc is all to brief but if you purchase this,Best Of Free, CD and also purchase their last album, Heartbreaker, you have a solid twosome by this band. Those two will give you a general idea on just how good this band really was and that is exactly what I did......
5 stars for both CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A best of, missed some, but pretty good overall..., March 25, 2000

Free was an awesome band of it's time - All Right Now still remains in my top 10 of great rockers of all time. This CD is a pretty good sampling of all the sides of Free - bluesy, rocky, mellow...I still like them better overall than the now-legacy rock of 'Bad Company'. Check these guys out if you don't mind a great CD of rock/blues/etc from the 60/70's that would fit well next to 'American Beauty', 'Abbey Road' and 'Dark Side of the Moon'.
