"Tess." Tameka lowered her voice. "You're asking me to cheat."

"Listen," Tess said. "I know you couldn't care less about the Blue Mug." Her tone seemed to say no sane person would care. "But I feel like someone has to knock Kim Carson down a few notches. Preferably me. So I'm asking you to help. Is that too much to expect from your best friend?"

"Tess, this competition is important to me," Tameka said quietly. "You know I've been feeling like a loser ever since Marina gave me that award. So why can't I beat Kim? That way everyone's happy."

Tess looked a little embarrassed. "Listen, Meeki, you're my best friend and I love you. But when it comes to playing to win, you're not exactly a . . . tiger. You're more like a pussycat. Beating Kim is too important to mess up. And I really think I'm the perfect person for the job."

Tameka felt miserable. Who was she trying to kid? The new Tameka was still the same old "Best Assister" Tameka. "All right," she said. "I'll do it."
