Book Description

This is a memoir, written in memory of my childhood best friend who, only an unfairly few years after we both made the kind of choices that come with growing up and which saw our friendship drift apart, passed away. This is also a work of creative non-fiction, because the guilt buried deep inside had chosen to finally make its presence known through this story. All events are genuine and characters real... except for those I made up, because how else do you personify what's tearing you apart inside? And now....

I'd like for you to meet Dave: musical virtuoso, natural-born comedian, and undeniably confident lady's man--the kind of guy an awkward kid would idolize. I'd like for you to meet Dave, but my words shall have to do.

I'd like for you to meet me: passionate writer, forgetful observer, and socially anxious, confused wanderer--that awkward kid striving to be an equal to his best friend. I'd like for you to meet me, but first I must find myself.

I'd like for you to meet a girl: initially an oddly nameless text, then a sweetly secretive voice, then an adorably alluring face, then a purposefully leading hand... offered to help, but which shoves me places I'd rather not go. I'd like for you to meet this intriguing stranger, but we'll have to meet her together.

And I'd like for you to meet my grief, but denial can be a hell of a thing to work through; so come meet them all, and consider each turned page a handshake with a personal truth beyond reality. Because the tales contained within, those both tall and true, are certainly eager and ready to meet with you.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

[the following is paraphrased from the author's personal website]

My Best Friend with Wings is an entirely independent and deeply personal project which took three years to complete.

In February of 2010, one of my best friends passed away. He had been an artistic guy who inspired creativity in those around him, and after he died, I knew I wanted to do something to honor his memory. In November of that year, I began writing... intending to give the world a chance to see him as I had seen him. Inadvertently, the story became a tale of my inability to come to terms with his death; and by writing it, I found my own path to acceptance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Brave, Affecting First Novel December 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
My Best Friend With Wings is a poignant first novel from author Pete Vellucci Jr. The book begins conventionally enough, with the main character returning to his hometown to attend a benefit concert for his estranged and recently deceased best friend. But after a strange meeting with an even stranger girl, things soon take a turn for the bizarre. Suddenly, the main character finds himself in a life-or-death battle against the worst kind of demon--those of his own making.
The plot weaves in and out of reality throughout the book, a technique which successfully replicates the trancelike nature of grief. Although the story is a tad confusing in the first half, as the pieces start to fit together (both for the reader and the protagonist) it becomes harder and harder to put the book down until you reach its riveting and affecting conclusion.
A brave first novel. I'll be looking for more!

WARNING - from the first page you will be drawn into a journey that will mesmerize you. You will not be able to put this book down once you start it. Very very rarely does a book appear that makes the reader care so much about the character and at the same time have a storyline that is this compelling. You won't regret a minute of this read and you will be disappointed when the story ends. A thought provoking journey where the real world and other worlds collide. Not just a great read, but a really really great read that will leave you with more questions than answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Battle With Oneself December 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was written by my son. It is his first book and I am very proud of what he has accomplished. I was truly amazed at his skill in creative writing. I must admit I rushed through some of the highly artistic prose within his book in my quest to reveal more of the story. None-the-less I recognize the talent within. I plan to read it again, slowly, like a good poem, and try and grasp the deeper concepts and symbolism. I was increasingly impatient with the growing mystery developing in the story, so I rushed through them in an attempt to get answers. If a writer's job is to make you feel some of the emotions of the main character then he did a fine job because I was feeling the same level of impatience. The mystery was growing and I couldn't wait to read the next chapter. I also think that everyone reading this story will interpret it in different ways and have their own favorite sections. I personally loved the religious indoctrination section and also the "coming of age" stories about friendship, romance, and teenage escapades. I think we can all relate to these from our own personal experiences and the writer does a wonderful job helping us experience his past through his eyes and heart. His attention to detail is just as keen in his dream world as it is in his physical world. There seems to be multiple layers to this story that will require more readings to unlock and I am looking forward to discovering them. For the writer it was his journey to accepting the loss of his friend. For others there is probably a whole lot more and you will not read this without revisiting your own past experiences and feelings.

More About the Author

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut and raised in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, Pete has spent much of his adult life moving around the Northeast in an almost gypsy-like fashion; along the way he fell in love with Boston--during his time residing in the area--and he very much hopes to settle there someday. A self-proclaimed "indie creative" with a focus on writing and game design, Pete's lifelong dream has simply been for recognition of his efforts. His first book, My Best Friend with Wings, is the most personal project he's ever undertaken: a creative non-fiction memoir chronicling his inability to deal with the death of a best friend. Pete believes the telling of this tale has been the most important expression of his life thus far. He's looking forward to a less emotionally taxing endeavor with his next project, which he expects to be a full force production in video game development.
