5.0 out of 5 stars Simply said, this album is a must-have for all Hooker fans.
Blues fans will be pleasantly surprised by this recording pairing the master himself with some of the finest musicians alive today. Special mention should be made of "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Don't Look Back" which feature the soulful voice and guitar of Van Morrison, as well as the familiar touch of Carlos Santana in "The Healer"...

3.0 out of 5 stars ***1/2. Polished latter-day Hooker
Author Stephen Thomas Erlewine once said something like this about "The Best Of Friends":
"This is for people who like to think they like Hooker, but really just want to hear Eric Clapton wail away."

It sounds a bit like the point of view of an old blues purist, perhaps, but one with a lot of truth to it. Many people who aren't attracted to John Lee...

Blues fans will be pleasantly surprised by this recording pairing the master himself with some of the finest musicians alive today. Special mention should be made of "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Don't Look Back" which feature the soulful voice and guitar of Van Morrison, as well as the familiar touch of Carlos Santana in "The Healer". Last, but certainly not least, adorers of Bonnie Raitt will love the playful duet she and Hooker provide in "I'm in the Mood".

BUY THIS CD, lower the lights, crank up the volume, and be swept away. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Over an hour of classic blues, December 7, 1998

John Lee Hooker's mumbling delivery always kind of bugs me. But his music usually makes up for it. High points on this CD are the songs with Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Santana. Everything on here is good, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD for people new to the blues., January 7, 2000
This review is from: The Best Of Friends (Audio CD)
I've been a Johnny Lee fan for a long time. When I heard this CD I had to Have it! It is made up of Duets with people such as Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Vaughan....an all-star cast.

The songs are from Johnny's vast career, but done with the other artist's style meshed with Johnny's. They really did a wonderful job with this CD.

And if you are new to the blues, have no fear buying this CD, in fact it is a great "first blues" CD for your collection...Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Blues Greatness Here, December 23, 2002

If you love the electric blues and blues slide guitar, this is a must-have album for your collection. Many of the songs are instantly recognizable blues patterns that have set the style for generations of blues and rock superstars. John Lee Hooker is on a par with B.B. King, Robert Johnson and other classic great blues artists. The repertoire of session musicians from the likes of Carlos Santana, Jimmy Vaughn, Bonnie Raitt, and Eric Clapton are not to be missed. John Lee Hooker set a blues standard - get this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have Album if you only get one of JLH, November 6, 2011

This Album is a must-have for the sole reason that it's the best collection of songs. "waterfront" is hauntingly beautiful that reminds us of friends we miss while "don't look back" is an inspiring ballad to renew chapters in our lives. Vocals are impressive and guitar work even more so. Santana does a great piece too with JLH and gives the selection a Latin twist. Get that mojito going and sit back with this Album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of John Lee Hooker and Friends, June 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My husband and I are great Blues fans with a particular liking for John Lee Hooker. Our friend James brought the CD around at New Year and we just had to have it. Blues music is a bit hard to come by in the local music stores which tend focus on more commercial stuff. WE have quite a few John Lee CDs and this one rounds off the collection nicely. I particularly like track 6 with Bonnie Raitt and the Santana one
Recommend highly to any Blues fan

It's JLH at his best. And, all of his friends that helped on the project, well that's just the icing on an otherwise exquisite cake.

I was pleased with the version of the older tunes. It did not sound like an old scratchy record recorded in the 40s!
