Book Description

March 1997
Best Friends is a celebration of compassion and a moving reminder of the special bond we share with our companion animal friends. Best Friends features heartwarming images of over 100 pets who have been cared for and given a second chance thanks to non-profit animal shelters nationwide. You'll meet animals rescued from fires, floods, and earthquakes, taken from unkind owners, abandoned or left homeless when an owner died, and rehabilitated after injury or illness. An introductory essay, quotes about our pet friends, background notes on all animals pictured, and a resource section round out this fine addition to the library of any animal lover.

About the Author

Sumner W. Fowler began taking pictures as a teenager with a borrowed camera, and worked for many years as a newspaper photographer. In the late 1970's, when he took a job with a humane society in Michigan, he began to apply his photographic skill to documenting animals and the shelters that care for them.

In the twenty years since then, he has amassed a huge archive of animal images, instructed humane officers in photography and taught darkroom techniques. His images have been used by prominent animal organizations, published in numerous magazines, and featured in three previous books. He lives in Petaluma, California with his adopted border-collie mix Rita.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, July 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Best Friends: Portraits of Rescued, Sheltered, and Adopted Companion Animals (Paperback)
Beautiful black and white photographs--the look of unconditional love in a beagle's eye, a sleepy yawn from a tabby. These and other photos (there's horses too!) of rescued animals make this book completely heartwarming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sumner Got It Right, September 6, 2006
This review is from: Best Friends: Portraits of Rescued, Sheltered, and Adopted Companion Animals (Paperback)
Sumner Fowler is an excellent photographer. I knew him in high school when he was a photographer for The Birmingham Eccentric. Even back then he had an eye for the unique. He knew what he wanted and was patient enough to wait for the right lighting, the right nod of the head or the look in the eyes. He saw life through a photographers lens. His talent has grown and he has captured the delightfullness of the animal world. Best Friends, is evidence of where Sumner's heart, as well as talent lies......

"How many hearts with warm red blood in them are beating under cover of the woods tonight, and how many teeth and eyes are shining! A multitude of animal people intimately related to us, but of whose lives we know almost nothing, are as busy about their own affairs as we are about ours." John Muir

Sumner's camera takes us into the lives of the animals he has photographed here. I highly recommend the book. The proceeds go to an excellent cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is there more?, September 4, 2006
This review is from: Best Friends: Portraits of Rescued, Sheltered, and Adopted Companion Animals (Paperback)
Each photo in this book touched me in some way for the better. Mr Fowler certainly has a magic touch with his camera. I'm hoping he comes out with more books.
