A Complete Collection: 1998-2004,
By
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
It may seem a little pre-mature for a band with only 3 albums to release a "best of" collection...but my guess is that this CD was released either to fulfill a contract obligation, or because of the fact that Fuel's lead singer recently left the band (though the group intends to continue on) and this is their way of closing a chapter in their career.
From 1998-2004, this CD contains just about every song that Fuel released as a single. From their first album, there are popular songs like "Shimmer" and "Sunburn" and the lesser known songs like "Jesus Or A Gun" and "Bittersweet". Then the group's second album is well represented with "Hemorrage In My Hands", "Bad Day", "Innocent" and "Last Time". Finally, there are songs from the group's final album with their original singer, such as "Falls On Me", "Won't Back Down" and "Quarter". This collection contains no new songs or unreleased songs (so it's strictly for the casual fan). The only song this CD is missing is "Million Miles" from the 3rd album, but that single didn't become very popular so I guess it can be over-looked. As a fan who owns and loves all 3 of Fuel's albums, I can tell you that if you enjoy this collection all the way through, you should seriously consider picking up each of their albums. The group hasn't written a bad song once in their career, and some of their best stuff never even became a hit. But if you only need a few of their hits, then this collection has it all!

Not quite ready...,

The content on the CD is great but I feel like this CD should have been one more studio album down the road.
It does contain their best known radio tracks but they only have 8 singles I think and then it seems like they took one non-single from each album. I know they could have thrown some live recordings, b-sides or material off their first few indie releases to make the album fuller but I really just think that they needed to wait until after their next studio album to release this with 2-3 more quality tunes which we all expect & can count on from Fuel. Overall, it's a good CD especially for someone that is just a casual fan and enjoys the radio hits... they are all on here! For anyone that is an actual fan of the band, go buy the new Special Edition versions of their 3 studio albums for something more.

Most people are questioning why the label would put out a Best of Fuel in 2005. I discovered this CD two months after its release. But it contains some of their best rock. Even though they had to compete with groups like Creed, 3 Doors Down and Nickelback for chart space, they have managed to carve their own level of success too. Best songs are Hemorrage, the undeniable Shimmer which has such a buildup factor to it, Bittersweet, and already a favorite to me 3 years later, Falls on Me. The faster numbers are just as superb. I liked the one song that was played in Ben Affleck's movie Daredevil and was on the album soundtrack. It just stood out far more than the other rock songs played in the movie. Carl Bell's songwriting is quite good. His singing is just great, ranging from smooth to aggressive to soulful all within the same song. How ironic that they're originally from Tennessee, yet they recorded their first album in Pennsylvania. The band's songs have such dramatic landscapes, melodies and rhythms. I hope that they continue to make more exciting music for years to come.
