4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, April 5, 2009
This review is from: Best Garden Plants for New York State (Best Garden Plants For...) (Paperback)
I got this book from my library and came to amazon to order a copy for my own collection. I was surprised to see a poor review posted in which the review author seems to be giving negative feedback for things that the book isn't about, like how to prune, care for plants, deal with animal pests, and generally garden in NYS. I do agree that a notation of what is native would have been helpful, but the other info "missing" was never intended to be included.

The authors state in their introduction that this book is for beginners, and that's me! What I really like about this book is that it is filters down the hundreds and hundreds of "possible" plants to a manageable number of ones that I could actually use (and will survive!) in my garden. I was pleased to see that I actually recognized most of the plants from nature walks as a kid (thanks, Mom!) and now I know where to plant them myself.

This book has one page per plants with beautiful, large photos. While it may not be the only gardening book you need, it is certainly a very useful supplement for your planning or even to use to teach yourself (or kids) about New York plants.

2.0 out of 5 stars Check it out from the library, April 23, 2008
This review is from: Best Garden Plants for New York State (Best Garden Plants For...) (Paperback)
Last time I checked New York state was a pretty large state and had a very diverse area for plants. Not according to this book. No effort is put into so many areas. Deer is a HUGE problem for gardening in New York but nothing is mentioned about deer at all. No help with how to prune, very little with upkeep for plants. No help with what works well together for soil and fertilizing. No help with what other animals to watch for. No nice little chart that most gardening books have that show you at a quick glance what you need to know. Like what plants are native. No information on that either. You might as well just go to Lowe's and buy what you like instead of using this book. I bet a person who works there could tell you as much as this book by reading the tags.
