Awesome human being!,

This review is from: Best Of Gene Watson (Audio CD)
I saw Gene Watson in person at the Spokane Interstate Fair and would enjoy seeing him again. Under-rated is an understatement. It is sad that we don't hear more of his music. Finding all of his music has been nearly impossible. Now I have finally located all of his music on-line and I will buy them all. He is my favorite artist.

Best Gene Watson "Greatest Hits" CD currently available...,

This review is from: Best Of Gene Watson (Audio CD)
I have been listening to Gene Watson for at least 20 years. Finally there is a CD worthy of this man's incredible singing talent. Just about every "hit" song that he has ever recorded is here. There are several other Gene Watson "greatest hits" CDs out there -- don't be fooled as this one is the one to purchase. Eighteen songs and not one of them weak. Gene has had an "up and down" career in the country music business. And that is quite sad, as he is one of the best pure country singers around today. In fact, he can sing the blues, honky tonk, and just about anything else with the very best of them. He has never received the credit that he deserves. Listen to "Paper Rosie","Love In The Hot Afternoon","The Old Man And His Horn". Gene is much more than the "king" of the hard-country vocal style, though he is that as well. I should mention that there are some other great Watson songs that, unfortunately, do not appear on this disc. Two that stand out are "14 Carat Mind" and "She's Out Doing What I'm Here Doing Without." There are others, but overall this is a superb collection. So until someone puts together some type of 2-disc set, this CD will have to do. You won't be skipping past or over any songs here. A great compilation from an artist who deserves much more recognition than he has ever received.

A Great Country Album!,
By Elmer McCurdy "Munkyboy" (Hollywood, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best Of Gene Watson (Audio CD)
This is the best sample of Gene Watson's work available on CD. It is essentially the album "Heartaches, Love and stuff" (which I always considered his best work) with a couple other good songs thrown in and, unfortunately, a couple of good songs thrown out. Gene's voice has such a great, unique, quality. I played this CD at work a few times and worried that my co-workers would hate it. Instead, Gene Watson gained a few more devoted fans. This album is hard not to like. My only wish is that they would re-release "Heartaches, love and stuff" in it's original form. If you're a fan of Gene's or are just curious about him, this is the best place to start.

NOT a 'hits' collection -- but simply an album Watson had on 'Curb',
This review is from: Best Of Gene Watson (Audio CD)
This is not a 'Hit's collection', as the title implies.
This is simply the two hits Watson had on 'Curb' during his two years on that label in 1984 and 1985. As he made the transition from M.C.A. with 11 hits there, then these two on Curb and then signed with Epic. This c.d. is copyrighted in 1996 and Watson had at that time (counting Capitol hits) 43 songs on the country chart. Even if you judge this c.d. at the point of "One Hell of a heartache" in 1985 Watson had 32 songs on the country chart. It seems Curb took the liberty to name this 'BEST OF GENE WATSON' even though it contains none of his other hits. Maybe this can be justified by thinking it is the 'Best of' during the two years recording at Curb, as the other 8 songs here are just plain album cuts. Curb does that a lot. Anyway this set is good because it is Watson and he is never disappointing! AND it seems to be maybe the only place, or at least one of the few where you can get "One Hell of a heartache". These two Curb hits and their b-sides are here: 1. "Got no reason now for goin' home" b/w "A memory away" - 1984 top 10. 2. "One Hell of a heartache" b/w "Sailing home to me" - 1985 just missed the top 40. Only 4 stars because of Curbs misleading way of titling.

This is an excellent album for any fan of country music and especially for those who love classic country. Gene Watsons incredible voice and smooth singing style are unmistakable. Several of the songs are old favorites well known to any fan of Gene Watson, but some have never been previously released on CD. "Sailing Home To Me", "A Memory Away", and other great songs are the reason I purchased this CD, and I wasn't disappointed. I am very happy these great songs are finally available on this medium and I anxiously await the debut of other Gene Watson albums on CD. Sincerely, Road Ranger
