DANCE-tasmagoria!,

This review is from: Best of Gino Soccio (Audio CD)
Amidst all the complaints about how sleazy/cheesy/quease-inducing most disco was, that was legitimate only when you were referring to the BAD music, (and come on, let's face it--there was quite a lot of it out there.)
Yet at its best, there were songs that were just so TIGHT, if you were out at the club and you heard the first few notes, you put your drink down, grabbed your friend or even somebody you just met and you hit the floor, simply because there was no way you could NOT dance! Songs that were rhythm-fueled, shimmering pop diamonds filled with lush arranging, catchy hooks, booty-bumping bass lines and enough viral funkiness to infect at least half of China, if not all. You know the ones: "I Want Your Love" and "Le Freak" by CHIC; "Just An Illusion" by IMAGINATION; "Got To Be Real" and "Star Love" by CHERYL LYNN; "Hot Stuff/Bad Girls" by the irreplaceable DONNA SUMMER, and "Dancer." Before "Dancer" I didn't even know there were Canadian artists doing music like this. It was because of Gino Soccio that I was eventually introduced to other artists like Celi Bee and Cerrone. However, and not to diss any of their fans, Gino was DA BOMB! "Dancer" and "Try It Out" have always been my two biggest faves from him. Hearing them now makes me wish that they were still making music like this.

Sophisticated Melody line!,

When I found this CD in a CD shop in LA during my trip there a few years ago, I was so excited ! I have long loved his sound and used to dance to it in a disco as a teenager. It is not old and can be still played in the current clubs, I believe. My favorites in this CD are Dancer and It's All Right, both of which are long versions, but the others also good.

TALENTED SONGWRITER AND MUSICIAN!,

This review is from: Best of Gino Soccio (Audio CD)
What else can be said about Gino Soccio? If you're a fan, you already know about the incredibly inventive disco and dance music he wrote in the late 70's/early 80's. Even the critics liked him! And we all know how terrible they were to disco overall. The only bad track, in my opinion, is the annoying "S-Beat" which we can only attest to a momentarily lapse of good taste, when he tried (in vain) to go in a more rock-oriented direction. But the rest is A+ material that will certainly bring back memories. For those unfamiliar with his work, this is a marvelous example of good, professional quality disco music. This truly is worthy of "Best Of" status.
