A GREAT CROONER TO REDISCOVER,
By L'auteur "L'auteur" (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best Of: Give Me the Moonlight (Audio CD)
Frankie Vaughan was a remarkable crooner with a wonderful voice. Full of Italian charm and elegance, he was a favourite performer in UK (he died tragically several years ago). You probably remember him in "Let's Make Love" with Marilyn Monroe? Rediscover the vibrant and powerful voice of this gentleman, one of the best crooners, and immerse yourself in the good old time of song!

I was recommended this CD by a British friend. And up to that time I had never heard of the singer. After listening to this CD I know a little about what the British were listening to at the time when my favorite music was on the charts in the US.Some of the songs are quite familiar, though done in a different style. And when I get used to the accent and the stylistic differences, I find I like most of what I hear. When the original is by a favorite singer (like Perry Como's "Kewpie Doll" or Jimmie Rodgers' "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine") I still prefer the original. Where I don't really like the original (like LaVern Baker's and Georgia Gibbs' "Tweedle Dee") Frankie Vaughan's version is an improvement. And always, to this devotee of 1950s music, Vaughan's version is quite listenable. Only about half of the songs on here were familiar to me. Listening to the unfamiliar ones, I got a chance to hear the songs without comparing them to versions I know. Frankie Vaughan comes off quite well there. Give it a listen. You might like this CD! I did.

Give me the moonlight,
By
This review is from: Best Of: Give Me the Moonlight (Audio CD)
Frankie's success owes as much to his skills as an entertainer as it does to his music, but the music was of a high quality as this collection shows. The set opens with Frankie's signature song (Give me the moonlight) and includes all of his UK top ten hits (and several lesser hits) from the fifties and early sixties. It does not include There must be a way (a UK top ten hit), So tired or Nevertheless, three hits recorded for another label in the late sixties, but if you're only going to buy one collection of Frankie's music, this is the one to choose. Frankie's UK top ten hits prior to 1967 were Green door (covered by Crystal Gayle in the seventies, the song became an eighties UK hit for Shaking Stevens), Garden of Eden (a number one hit for Frankie), the double-sided Man on fire / Wandering eyes, Gotta have something in the band Frank (with the Kaye sisters), Kisses sweeter than wine, Kewpie doll, Come softly to me (with the Kaye sisters), The heart of a man, Tower of strength (Frankie's second and last UK number one hit) and Loop-de-loop. Frankie's first UK hit, Istanbul, just missed the top ten, as did the double-sided Can't get along without you / We are not alone. All these classic songs are included here. Frankie also had some success as an actor but as far as his music is concerned, the tracks on this collection are what he will be mostly remembered for.
