This album is a must-have for all Gladys Knight & The Pips fans. It contains one of my favorite Gladys Knight & The Pips performances....the hauntingly beautiful song STILL SUCH A THING (written and produced by Ashford & Simpson). This song alone is worth the cost of the album. There are other great songs on this album including the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis classic WHEN YOU'RE FAR AWAY, YOU'RE NUMBER ONE (IN MY BOOK) which was co-written by two members of The Sylvers and LOVE OVERBOARD (which became Gladys Knight and the Pips' last number one R&B single on Billboard). Their performance of this song also won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. This album will prove that although they were at the height of their popularity during their Motown and Buddah years, they still made great music during their final years as a group with Columbia Records.

GK&P recorded five albums (including a Xmas colleciton) during their stint at Columbia Records in the eighties. While failing to garner any massive hits, this best of package is a reminder that they turned out some durable, satisfying music in this period. As she had at Buddha Records, during the mid-seventies, Gladys veered further away from her Motown persona. There's no angry/scorned/pleading Gladys here. Lyrics filled with optimism are the order of the day on songs like Landlord, I Will Fight, My Time, Hero and You're Number One. In one instance--A Friend Of Mine--Gladys's man has left her (for one of her own girlfriends!) but Gladys sounds more like she's kicking herself than lashing out at him. Songwriters and producers, notably Ashford & Simpson and Leon Sylvers, crafted danceable, glossy tracks, that while not downright funky (a la Friendship Train or On & On) can still make you want to pop your fingers. Save The Overtime, co-written and produced by Gladys and Bubba Knight went all the way to number one on the black music charts. The Pips are customarily smooth and supportive throughout, if a little less imaginative than they had been in the past. The most prized selection here for many may be Still Such A Thing from 1980 where Gladys meditates on the state of love. Her contrast of full-throated cries with falsetto swoops makes for a thrilling climax. Others will vote for Bourgie Bourgie with its percolating groove and rare social commentary. I'm guessing Sony included live versions of the group's classic Motown and Buddha hits because of their name recognition. While Gladys sounds a little fatigued during this concert, there is undeniable excitement there.

Finally after all my years of raving about "Still Such A Thing" (the original version as rendered by GK & TPs from the 1980 album "Bout Love"), it has been released! Listen to me, music lovers. Get this for this wonderful, wonderful jam, if for nothing else. And you will see just why I rave so much about it. It is one of my all time favorite jams, and I just bet it will become one of yours, also.

GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS AT THEIR BEST!!,

Gladys Knight & The Pips made six albums (GLADYS KNIGHT, ABOUT LOVE, TOUCH, THAT SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR, VISIONS, & LIFE) for Columbia Records. Although they did not produce any massive hits on Columbia, like they did with Motown and Buddah, they managed to come out with wonderful songs. My personal favorites come from the ABOUT LOVE and TOUCH albums, most notably the songs produced by the dynamic duo, Ashford and Simpson. My favorite song on this album by far is "Bourgie Bourgie." I never heard the song until I purchased this CD and immediately loved the beat and sound of the song. I also like "Still Such A Thing" and "Keep Giving Me Love". The rest of the songs I have on another Gladys Knight and The Pips CD, THE BEST OF THE COLUMBIA YEARS....which is also a good album. I only wish Colubia would reissue all of the six albums that they relased.....especially GLADYS KNIGHT and ABOUT LOVE, that would be the icing on top of the cake for all Gladys Knight and The Pips fans!

I was looking for Taste of Bitter Love and Bourgie Bourgie and found other gems that I completely forgot about like Landlord, I Will Fight, and Still Such A Thing. Absolutley ALL of the old jams and, of course, the standard classic GLADYS anthems done live.

I'm a senior citizen and I purchased this CD for the song MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA not really expecting to be into the rest of the songs. After receiving the CD it has become one of my favorites. The disco beat and energy reminds me of my disco days and I catch myself "attempting" to repeat some of the old dance steps. I recomend this CD if you like GOOD TIME MUSIC.
