I first heard Gowan on the soundtrack to the movie Navy Seals (crappy film, great soundtrack). His song, the Dragon, was interesting enough that I sought out this anthology.
Gowan's music is not easy to classify. It seems to be caught somewhere between AOR and pop with some new age elements thrown in for good measure. This definitely isn't your typical AOR music. For one thing, there is a lot more emphasis on keyboards than guitars. Gowan's voice is the real instrument here; with its unique Jon Anderson meets Geddy Lee meets John Waite quality.
Released in 1997, The Best of Gowan provides a nice overview of the singer/songwriter's solo career. You get 16 songs, spanning the better part of a decade, that give you a good idea of what Gowan's music is all about.
