5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Grain-Free beginners!! May 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've followed Cara for years since she sold handmade items from a small Etsy store. She has always impressed me with her genuine, open, and teachable spirit and I've loved the community she has created through her website, Health, Home, and Happiness. Cara's ventures have always had honesty, authenticity and integrity. This book is no different.

This book is written by a busy mother of little ones who has developed simple, delicious recipes that can be prepared without a great deal of time, and with ingredients that are fairly available (if not at a health food store, then through the magic of internet shopping!) Many of the recipes have 6-7 ingredients or less. They are, as she says, kid-tested, though I would note that doesn't mean every child will love them. But if you are moving your family to a grain-free lifestyle, this book and Cara's subscription service offered at Health, Home, and Happiness is incredibly helpful in making that transition. Those who are familiar with Cara's meal plans through the subscriptions will not find new recipes here. This is a "best-of" book, after all!

I like that the book itself is small - 7x10 inches and less than 1/4 inch thick. Compared to some recent Paleo-food-blogger tomes, I find this much more likely to be referenced frequently. Cara includes a photo with every recipe, and while the photos are not slick or flashy, I find them to be very helpful in deciding what I want to make.

I am, perhaps, most fond of what Cara did and did not include in the book. First, she included brief (emphasis on "brief") explanations and insights, tips and tricks. She also included a wonderful two-page section titled "Sourcing High Quality Food" that a brief (again, emphasis on "brief") explanation of what one should seek when trying to feed one's family a whole foods, grain-free diet. What she did NOT include was a lengthy personal testimony, an overly-involved scientific explanation of why one would want to be grain-free, or a judgmental rant against the Standard American Diet. I'm thankful for that restraint on her part. It makes it possible that I'd pass this book on to others who have not jumped on the grain-free bandwagon just yet.

If is for this reason that I am most excited about this book. I receive the grain-free meal plans subscription so I've seen these recipes before. I didn't NEED this. But I had a hunch my husband, who was overwhelmed and intimidated and, frankly, put-off, by the vast amount of information in other enormous paleo/grain-free cookbooks, would find this book to be an easy read. And from Cara's explanations and suggestions, his interest was piqued and he's spent some time researching the reasons for being grain-free. He's no longer just humoring me, but developing his own understanding of this journey.

I think this book would be ideal for passing on to grandparents, parents, friends, etc., who are curious and open to learning more about this way of eating. Perhaps after seeing what this food looks like and reading the wholesome ingredient lists, one could direct those who want more information to Cara's site or other paleo/specific carbohydrate diet/ GAPS sites. In the meantime, order this book. You'll have in your hands a perfect introduction to the whole foods, grain-free life!

5.0 out of 5 stars We can have cold sandwiches again! April 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
Cara's recipes are by-and-large simple for the grain-free lifestyle, since it can be daunting at best when embarking on a new diet. The simple crepes with coconut flour have made cold "sandwiches" possible again, and we even use them for tacos. I love being able to see a photo of each dish to know what I'm getting into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making grain-free simpler and less scary April 24, 2012
Format:Paperback
Cara has a way of taking the fear out of preparing grain-free meals. From what to buy at the grocery store, to step-by-step preparation instructions to pictures of the final product, all of the guessing is removed. The learning curve when removing what was formerly a dietary staple (wheat) can be steep, so why not benefit from someone who already walked that road? If you are just taking your first baby steps towards being grain-free or if you are experienced and need some fresh ideas, this book is for you. While not all of the recipes are also GAPS friendly, many are or are easily adaptable to the GAPS diet, so this book is also a gem of a resource for GAPS families as well.

This book is a good one. It is very hard to change the way you have eaten your entire life and stop eating all grains. It's possible to cut down, this book is a good one to use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, simple recipes
This is an excent book for the beginner; however, nothing fancy or too original for the experienced cook. A nice cookbook for the grain-free kitchen nonetheless.
