Buy This and You Will Go Wrong!, January 3, 2006
This review is from: The Best of Hal Kemp and His Orchestra (Audio CD)
Terrible sound quality! This CD was made in conjunction with Sony Music Special Products and yet their usual quality is nowhere to be found. The liner notes by Scott Yanow are filled with biographic inaccuracies, wrong recording dates and musician/soloist info, and even misspells the name of Kemp's vocalist Maxine Gray throughout. The digital restoration is credited to Ken Robertson who has done better on other similar titles. The main problem with the sound quality is that there is too much hiss, too much crackle, and the music sounds lifeless. I have the original 78rpm Brunswick records of all these tracks, and in all cases they sound much better than the "remastered" tracks on this cd. There have been numerous advances in sound restoration techniques during these past 10 years and yet listening to this CD you'd think we've taken a few steps back instead! Save your money and skip this one!

Simply Magic!, January 4, 2006
This review is from: The Best of Hal Kemp and His Orchestra (Audio CD)
Although I own five Hal Kemp CDs, this is the one I return to the most often. The selection and placement of the music by Collectors' Choice is superlative and the sound quality is good, but not perfect. Because of the rarity of Hal Kemp's music, I am willing to overlook imperfect sound quality, especially when the variety of songs offered is above average and wonderful. However, if perfect sound quality is most important to you, then it would be best to keep searching. Regardless, I find every song delightful, including Irresistible, In the Middle of a Kiss, Thrilled, Page Miss Glory, The Touch of You Lips, This Year's Kisses, and Pennies From Heaven. Every singer, including the magical Skinnay Ennis and the superb Maxine Gray, is perfectly matched to each song. To me, this music is pure heaven, and let us hope more studios will release Mr. Kemp's timeless recordings to be enjoyed by future generations.
Note: If you enjoy music of this era, you will not want to miss the brilliant Ray Noble Orchestra with Al Bowlly as well as the wonderful music of Eddy Duchin, Joe Loss, Carroll Gibbons and 1930s Bing Crosby.
