4.0 out of 5 stars "East meets West"
I became interested in Hiroshima upon hearing the theme from "East meets West", a cooking show on the Food Network. I wasn't disappointed when I heard a dynamic mix of aggressive rhythm and provocative melancholy on this CD. My mood fluctuated with the music, going from steamy hot to soul searching, from feeling light on my feet to feeling comfortably blue...

3.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Good Starting Place!!!
I always recommend greatest hits or compilation CD's when listeners are unfamiliar with an artist. Such would be the case with Hiroshima (the L.A. based band). This is a good starting place for those wanting to get a taste of their world/pop/jazz sound. They have their own unique style. The top cuts on this one are San Say, One Wish, and Go.

I wasn't disappointed when I heard a dynamic mix of aggressive rhythm and provocative melancholy on this CD. My mood fluctuated with the music, going from steamy hot to soul searching, from feeling light on my feet to feeling comfortably blue. The music was varied and interesting, certainly never boring. A great CD to mix in with other styles of music on a Sunday afternoon whether it be gray or sunny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly different in the jazz arena, July 27, 2000

My wife and I just saw them a few weeks back, and this CD captures the energy of the band (Black and White is great, but a bit to smooth-jazzed-out). These guys are great, as I have been following them since their first CD. Mind you, as most 'best ofs', there is some critical bits missing, however the record company did a decent job on this one...Their sound is very unique, however is not totally East or West - their blend of the elements of both is infectious! If you want to round out your jazz collection, or just get something different from all the smooth jazz bs that is out there (eg Kenny G), try this one out - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz at its best, January 19, 2004

Hiroshima is a wonderful smooth jazz fusion group. This group is original because it combines elements of western and Japanese music in a very unique fusion. The trademark of this group is the sound of the traditional Japanese instrument, the "koto", which can be heard in each song. For those of you who are already familiar with smooth jazz, this group stays true to the traditioanl smooth jazz sound, but the Japanese elements make it more interesting. The only unfortunate part of this CD is that after a few songs it may start sounding like background music (ex: the kind of music you might listen to in a contemporary Japanese restaurant or in an office), but overall it is a very refreshing CD, which I think is especially good as background music for parties, get togethers, studying, relaxing, or thinking. This is low calorie music, meaning that it is not heavy, very intricate or complicated like many forms of jazz (ex: be bop).

I cannot say this is my favorite group but they definitely have some great hits on this CD. A few of my favorites are "Go", "Island World", "Hawaiian Electric", and I especially love "One Wish." When I went online searching for Smooth Jazz music I found this and after listening to the samples I knew it would be a CD I would enjoy. I had heard "One Wish" else where so I already had an idea about this band and once I heard clips of the other songs, I knew The Best of Hiroshima was a CD I had to add to my collection. If you like upbeat instrumentals in a kind of rockin' beat, then I definitely suggest taking a look at The Best of Hiroshima.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great "Best Of" compilation, December 14, 2003

This is the best of the quazi-cultural group, Hiroshima. A good cross between Japanese and American influences. Sort of a healthy synergy of East and West which creates a style that is a pleasure to listen to. The songs that really stand out are "Another Place", "One Wish" and "Hawaiian Electric". It's probably worth buying the CD just for those 3 songs!

If you are a music purist, you might not like this concept. Purist or not, you'll have to admit that this one works.

This is a good CD, but I am quite disappointed that it does not include "Street Corner Symphony" from the "East" CD.

This cd is definitely the best fo, although Odori is by far the best cd of Hiroshima. Most are hits from primarily three of their lps/cds. That takes nothing away from the great music they have produced over the years. If you've not ever heard of Hiroshima, this is a great introduction and maybe you'll fill your collection with their great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful Sounds Take You on a Journey, May 23, 2006
This review is from: Best of Hiroshima (Audio CD)
As a fan of smooth jazz, I found this CD to be one that is a must for my jazz collection. I will not give any technical comments, I will simply say that this is an incredibly beautiful sound. Its Far Eastern quality easily transports one to a hauntingly wonderful place; extremely relaxing! This is my first purchase by this group, hence a greatest hits CD, however it will not be my last. Although all of the cuts are A+ "One Wish" is awesome!!!
