I tried one receipe and thought it was great read 'Best Homemade Soups' you will find at least one receipe to try and you will want to share this book too.

In my opinion most of these recipes aren't truly homemade as most of the items start with cream of mushroom or cream of chicken.

These "recipes" call for using canned soup as a base. Just doctor them up a bit. Easy, but not what I was looking for. Better luck next time.

We're heading into winter here in the Pacific NW, so when I was offered the opportunity to try a new soup cookbook, of course I said "yes!"

This is a modest collection of soups using commonly available ingredients. There's a nice variety here - chicken, beef, ham, veggies - put together in creative ways. Can we say "comfort food"?

I've made three of these so far:

1) Cheesy Chicken Rice Soup -- an easy assemblage of chicken, carrots, celery, mushrooms, rice, and cheese. I felt it needed just a touch of something, so I added about 1/2 tsp of herbs de provence (a mixture of marjoram, basil, tarragon, and parsley) -- just enough to give it a bit more depth. That's the beauty of these recipes: they're good basic recipes that are good "as is," but you can also add your own touch if you want and they'll still come out great.

2) Taco Soup III -- this is just what the name suggests: a taco in soup form. This was excellent "as is," but I think I'll add a can of black beans the next time I make it.

3) Creamy Tomato Soup -- this was a rich creamy version of the traditional cream of tomato soup, this one made with cream cheese. Another excellent soup "as is" -- and this is one I won't 'adjust." It's really that good.

This is not "Food & Wine" or "Gourmet" fare -- it's good solid down-home cooking. Novice cooks will appreciate these easy recipes, and cooks who often have to prepare something tasty in a hurry will appreciate the common pantry ingredients.

Sarah J. Larson's Best Homemade Soups is a collection of quick and easy comfort soups. I've tried the chili, taco soups,salsa chicken soup, and lasagna soup and they were all delicious. I added a can of rinsed black beans to the salsa chicken soup and served them with tortilla chips, and it came out really good. Sarah says the lasagna soup is her family's #1 requested soup, and I believe it.
With the exception of a crock pot recipe, the soups can be prepared and completed within an hour. Most of the recipes contain ingredients one would already have on hand, making them a quick and inexpensive way to get a meal on the table when in a rush. Add some good bread and a salad and you've got a complete meal.
I can't wait to try the Potato Chowder Supreme!

When looking for a cookbook that I want to keep, I look for several things. Does the book describe the types of ingredients that are being used? Are the amounts and directions specific? Are there any personal anecdotes about the recipes being shown? Are there pictures to show me how it should look? Does the recipe give a preparation time? Is the layout of the recipe easy to follow and preferably on one page. For the kindle there is an additional thing I look for. Is there a clickable table of contents? None of these are deal breakers. However, the more of the above questions that are answered in yes , the better chance of me purchasing it.

This book as it has homemade in the title has an additional item to check for. In my opinion most of these recipes aren't truly homemade as most of the items start with cream of mushroom or cream of chicken. In one instance she even used a lasagna in a box as a basis for a soup. So while I take umbrage to the word homemade, as I consider homemade should be from fresh ingredients, it is still a very useful book.

If you desire to have hearty soups that could almost be a meal in of themselves, that take minimal time (although a couple of them are designed for slow cookers). This is the book for you.

The below comments refer back to what I expect in a cookbook.

1. The format of the recipes is the top half is a list of ingredients, one ingredient per line.
2. Below are the directions in paragraph form (not my favorite method).
3. There are no illustrations.
4. The author doesn't list number of servings. (Although sometimes she will mention if the recipe is only for 1 or 2 people.
5. Cooking times are not listed.
6. When she uses prepared items she lists the can size.
7. She does talk about how the recipes have been received by friends and family.

I recommend this book.

Author Sarah J. Larson has compiled a collection of quick and easy soup recipes that almost any cook can prepare. Her recipes are clearly written and use standardized recipe writing. There is an active table of contents making navigation easy.

Some of the recipes you will find in her cookbook include:

Easy Tomato Beef Soup
Cheesy Chicken and Rice Soup
Easy Chili
Turkey and Dumplings Soup (this soup is not your usual turkey and dumplings soup as it uses chili seasoning to spice it up)
