5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific December 1, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I started listening to Hubert Laws when I was learning to play the flute and someone recommended him to me. I'm very glad they did.
This is a great jazz CD from start to finish, and a good introduction to Laws. Even if you not a huge jazz fan, you'll probably enjoy this music, there's a little bit of everything in the compilation...Bach, James Taylor, John Coltrane, Bizet, etc.

PLEASE FOLKS... anyone who seriously values true genius in musical interpretation MUST purchase Hubert Laws' "The Rite of Spring". The first 2 tracks (Pavane, The Rite of Spring" are as close to perfection as any human being can attain. PLEASE check it out...you WILL shake your head in awe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hubert Laws - Jazz, Pop, Classical October 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
~ The CTI label was best known in the 1970's for bringing jazz to a broader audience by combining established jazz stars with arrangements that merged elements of jazz, pop, and soul. Some of their recordings worked better than others; for the jazz aficionado the better recordings usually resulted when the orchestration took a back seat to the jazz soloing. In the case of Hubert Laws, his exceptional talent as both a jazz and classical flautist allowed him to excel in his CTI outings, sometimes despite heavy-handed production and arrangements.
~ This 72 minute CD offers a good overview of his CTI efforts of the early to-mid-'70s. Laws demonstrates the broad range of his eclectic tastes with adventurous interpretations of everything from jazz {Coltrane's "Moment's Notice"} to classical {Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring"; Bach's "Allegro from Concerto #3 in D"; Debussy's "Syrinx"; Satie's "Gymnopedie #1"; Bizet's "Farandole"} to traditional music {"Amazing Grace"} to pop {"Midnight at the Oasis"; "Fire and Rain"; "Morning Star"}. Arranger / keyboardist Bob James contributes his composition "Love Loop" 9sounding a lot like a track from Issac Hayes 'Shaft' soundtrack)and some nice solo work on several tracks although the electric piano sounds a little dated. Don Sebesky does the arrangements on several tracks - sometimes a little too much.
~ If you are looking for improvisational jazz you get that on a few of the tracks, but often hemmed in by the arrangements. If you are looking for pleasant groove music you get plenty of that on this enjoyable CD. If you love the sound of the flute, you will love this CD.
